1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and spoke freely. Information obtained can be considered reliable. Education - Primary School (1 yr). Length of Service - 7 yr with the Chinese Nationalist Army and 1 yr with the CCF.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
20 Sep 50 - PW entered KOREA with the 198th Div via SINUIJU. During the early part of Jan 51 the Div arr at a point (place name unk) immediately above the 38th Parallel via P’YONGYANG. Here the Div dug air raid shelters and trenches.
O/a 16 Jan 51 - 198th Div dep this area on foot.
19 Jan 51 - Arr at HONGCH’ON.
20 Jan 51 - Dep HONGCH’ON.
O/a 23 Jan 51 - Arr at HWACHO’ON. While at HWACH’ON troops received political tng (propaganda against USA) daily.
O/a 28 Jan 51 - Dep HWACH’ON.
29 Jan 51 - Arr CHUNCH’ON.
31 Jan 51 - Dep CHUNCH’ON.
O/a 3 Feb 51 - Arr HONGCH’ON.
5 Feb 51 - 594th Regt dep HONGCH’ON and arr approx 16 km S of HONGCH’ON to reinforce the 593rd Regt which had been engaged with UN Forces for about 3 days in this vicinity.
9 Feb 51 - PW and 3 others deserted while enroute to the front and surrendered to the 8th ROK Div. 594th Regt advanced with the 1st Bn as the spear-head and flanked on the right by 2nd Bn and 3rd Bn on the left.

Original strength of the 594th Regt while in MANCHURIA was 1,400 men, 600 men as of 9 Feb 51 (1st Bn), 3rd Co strength 47 men; 1st Plat 14 men.
594th Regt prior to 9 Feb 51 hand no engagement with UN Forces. Therefore received no resupply of ammo or weapons while in KOREA.
Majority of the personnel were killed or wounded by air strafing.
According to hearsay there were about 10 Russ trucks and many horses and wagons at the 66th Army Hq (location unk). All Bn CO and above rode horses.

c. Morale:
Morale of the former CNA troops was very, very low when compared to that of original CCF troops due to discrimination and assignments of heavy duties.

198th Div: “CHUNG HWA BU” (China Dept)
592nd Regt: “UR CHI BU” (27th Dept)

Above code names have been used since the 198th Div entered KOREA 28 Sep 50.

f. Unit Intentions:
While in HONGCH’ON PW heard the following from the Co Political Instructor (3rd Co):
CCF 42nd, 66th Armies and NKA I Corps were to maintain a defense line (defense line extended E to W in central sector, location unk) in order to provide sufficient time for the units in the rear to re-equip and reorganize for their spring offensive which was to encircle and annihilate UN troops in the central sector. As of 5 Jan 51 the Army and its Div were all present in HONGCH’ON and in its vicinity (location unk). 66th Army in the central sector, 42nd Army to the west and the NKA I Corps to the east.
198th Div defense line extended 2.4 km. 594th Regt in the center, 593rd Regt to the west and 592nd to the east. There were several officers and enlisted men selected from each CCF Div. present in KOREA, to return to MANCHURIA as combat instructor for reinforcement units which were preparing to enter KOREA in the very near future.

g. Supply:
197th Div received no ammo, food, clothing supplies or wpn in KOREA. Twice daily several mess personnel were dispatched from each Co to procure rice and other foods.
