ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3512　23 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0201)　16 February 1951

PW captured when unit was overrun by 19th ROK Regt. PW appeared to be in good physical condition. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Held rank of 2nd Lt in the Chinese Nationalist Army. Information considered fairly reliable.

PW was conscripted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at CHINGTAO, 6 Feb 49. Captured by CCF troops at HAINAN Island 1 May 50 and immediately assigned to the 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt. Crossed into N KOREA 20 Oct 50. Crossed the 38th Parallel 1 Jan 51 and marched for approx 5 days arriving at a village N of SEOUL. The 334th Regt bivouacked at this location for approx 15 - 20 days. The 3rd Bn arrived at location 500 meters generally N of Hill 473 13 Feb 51. The 8th Co dug in on Hill 473 and was told to defend this position at all cost. 151500 to 151600 Feb 51 8th Co received heavy arty and MG fire. During this engagement the 8th Co received heavy casualties and withdrew to the rear. PW believes that all of 8th Co was annihilated. 334th Regt CP located 4 km NE of Hill 473. No knowledge of adjacent unit.

The 334th Regt originally had 4 Arty pieces (45mm). Present number unk. Also heard that 112th Div had 4 Arty pieces.

Heard from political leader that members of his regt departed for MANCHURIA 20 days ago to bring back approx 500 replacements. They were to return within 15 days. These replacements were to be assigned each Bn.

Food insufficient. Troops had 2 meals in 3 days. Prior to capture each man had 60 rd. No knowledge of reissue. No knowledge of supply points.

Morale comparatively low due to heavy air and arty bombardment, lack of food and cold weather. Approx 50 percent of troops have no desire to fight. Approx 18 men from 8th Company deserted one week ago. Prior to crossing 38th Parallel 2 men committed suicide.

Subject read UN leaflet on 13 Feb 51 and planned to surrender at earliest opportunity. Leaflets were never discussed among troops for fear of being reprimanded by superiors.

Heard from political leader that 39th, 40th, 42nd and 50th Armies are presently located in KOREA. Present disposition unk. No knowledge of other units reinforcing the 38th Army.

PW observed 60 US PW approx 2 months ago at N of 38th Parallel. Heard from comrade that they will be taken to RUSSIA.
