1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and talked freely.
Information seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW inducted into the NKA 2 Aug 50 at HAEJU (YC 3813). Assigned to the 105th Tank Div, 1st Inf Regt, 3rd Rifle Bn, 8th Co, 3rd Plat, 1st Sqd, but received no training because of constant UN air attacks.
20 Sep 50, retreated with the 105th Tank Division. Division arrived at P’YONGYANG a week later. The Div recuperated for about 3 days and proceeded north, arriving at KUIJU (phonetic) approx 40 km SE of SINUIJU (XE 1839) 15 Nov 50. The following day, the 105th Div moved east, arriving at KUSONG (XE 9228) 20 Nov 50. Here, the PW co Comdr announced that the 1st Regt would be integrated into the 17th Div. The disposition of the 2nd and 3rd Regt, 105th Div, was unknown.
1 Dec 50, PW departed with the 17th Div south passing through SINANJU arrived at PYONGYANG 29 Dec 50. The 17th Div recuperated here for a few days and then departed southward via a mountain routes, arriving at SEOUL 16 Jan 51.
The 17th Div was given the assignment of performing guard duty within SEOUL.
3 Feb, the 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 17th Div was ordered to defend the HAENGJU (CS 0763) area at all costs. The 8th Co was to be the first line of resistance, on the southern banks of the HAN River, and the 7th and 9th Rifle co, HMG Co and the mortar co were to hold the MLR on the northern banks of the HAN River.
The 8th co arrived at their position 7 Feb 51, and prepared its position on top of a hill. PW was given the responsibilities of a sqd ldr without rank on this day.
14 Feb 51, this hill was encircled by ROK units, and after a brief engagement, PW surrendered with 6 others; two escaped and the rest of his plat were KIA.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
The 17th Div mission was to perform guard duty within SEOUL. The 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 17th Div was ordered to defend the HAENGJU (CS 0763) area at all costs. PW believes that the 3rd Bn is still in this area less the 2nd Plat, 8th Co, which was annihilated.

The 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 17th Div, suffered heavy casualties when it held an MLR in the HAENGJU area between 7 Feb 51 to 14 Feb 51.

d. Personalities:

Wounded in his left leg on 31 Jan 51 at SEOUL, by UN fighter planes. He was evacuated to the rear.

e. Replacements:
17th Div had received none since Nov 50.

f. Supplies:
Two days supply of rice and salt were received by each unit supply platoon 3 times weekly; PW received 100 grams of rice a day. No ammo or clothing received.

g. Signal:
Telephone and runners were utilized in all the units of the 17th Division.

h. Morale:
The morale of the troops was low because of insufficient food and clothing. Because the officers mistreated the soldiers, desertions were frequent.

i. Psychological Warfare:
PW surrendered voluntarily because his position was encircled and he had no choice but to surrender.
PW saw leaflets once at an unknown area.
The leaflets were written in Chinese; PW cannot read the language.
PW reaction to the leaflets was passive.
