1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and claims to be a S Korean who was forced into the volunteers group of the NKA.
Report seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW conscripted into the Volunteer Group in Sep 50 by the NKA from his home.
Inducted into the 2nd Sqd, 4th Plat, 2nd Co, 1st Bn, 1st Regt, 8th Div on 25 Oct 50 at CHOSAN.
Received one week of basic infantry training at CHOSAN.
Travelled from CHOSAN to BUGON NI.

PW deserted his unit on 4 Feb 51 and surrendered 10 Feb 51 at SIHUNG MYON.

b. Location and Activities of Units:
On 4 Feb 51 at PUGONG-NI (CS1030 square) PW deserted his unit; he met and heard from a fellow deserter that the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Plat went into combat while the 4th Plat remained back, looking for the PW. He also heard that the 1st Bn was routed by the UN forces and was retreating to SEOUL to reorganize.

e. Supplies:
PW received 100 rd of ammo at HAEJU in Jan 51 and 100 more at “PUGONG-NI” later in Jan 51.

f. Signal:

h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Moral in PW Plat was low because of the 12 men, 9 were S. Korean personnel.

i. Medical:
There was no epidemic in PW unit.
PW did not receive any immunization.
In PW Plat 4 soldiers had frostbitten feet.
PW applied mercurochrome. Frostbitten soldiers were forced to follow the unit.
PW received 5 days of stretcher-bearer instruction at ANBYON in Sep while in the Volunteer Group.
PW, as a Medic in that Plat, carried iodine, mercurochrome, aspirin, and bandages.

j. CCF:
PW saw CCF troops near the SEOUL area.

k. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered because he wanted to go home.
PW saw UN leaflets in Jan at PUNGONG-NI.
It stated: “The CCF are taking your food and whatever things they can from your houses.
The final battle will be won by the UN Forces.”
PW believed in what the leaflet stated.
PW felt that the others felt as he did.
