ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3488　21 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI 1526)　14 February 1951

PW was cooperative but had only limited information.

Information seems reliable.

Conscripted 7 Aug 50 at INJE (DT 2713).

Received 2 months training.

Departed INJE Sep 50 and arriving at YONGWON (BU 8912) 4 Oct 50 where he was assigned to the V corps, Rear Hq, and received 15 days training.

V Corps departed from YONGWON 16 Nov 50, passed through YONGDOK (BU9643), and arrived at INJE on 30 Nov 50.

Rested for 15 days in reserve of the II Corps which was engaged in battle in that general area.

V Corps relieved the II Corps on 28 Dec 50. II Corps fell back to regroup and conscript recruits.

PW deserted his unit 7 Jan 51 and surrendered at CS 947447.

The V Corps was last seen 7 Jan 51.

V Corps: 12th, 7th and the 3rd Division, Rear Hq and Guard Unit.

Rear Hq: 1 Battalion had Food, Ammo, and Clothing Companies and Sig Unit.

Battalion had 220 EM and officers, 4 wagons, 16 horses and 4 oxen which were used for transportation. Approx 40 men were armed with M1891.30 riflles and a few SMG.

8 KIA from aircraft, and 16 died of typhus.

The Rear Hq supply company usually collected 10 to 40 bags of rice from villages and towns weekly. Up to the time of desertion, PW supply wagon was attacked three times by planes, during day-light hours.

The Rear Hq distributed approx 12 bags of rice weekly to Div Rear Hq for further distribution to frontline units.

The V Corps ammunition was received from INJE ammo dump.

Ammo was transported to INJE from the MANCHURIA-KOREA Border by civilian “A-Frame” bearers, who travelled only during the night.

Ammo was stockpiled in INJE, and, through the management of Home Ministry, bearers transported the ammo from MYON to MYON until the MYON where the rear headquarters was located was reached. The ammo company usually transported it from the MYON to the Rear Headquarters where it was kept for resupplying the units that were in combat.

Approx 10,000 rd of small arms ammo were kept on hand by the rear hq as of 7 Jan 51.

Morale of men was low due to inadequate equipment and no air support. Few were overheard to say that the NKA had no reason to continue this war as they were incapable of fighting a war.

Runners were employed between the V Corps and the Rear Headquarters.

Approx 13 men died of typhus Dec 50 at INJE.

3 men died of severe cases of frozen feet 28 Dec 50. About half of the PW company suffered from frozen feet. No medicines other than mercurochrome were received.

PW surrendered. He was constantly reprimanded by the battalion commander because of the lack of food supplies being gathered. PW was put to blame for the insufficient food for the frontline troops. Being unable to stand the constant degradation, PW deserted with 6 others on 7 Jan 51.

PW saw leaflets on 12 Jan 51. It read: “Surrender and good treatment will be offered”.

PW believed the contents to be true.
