FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0405) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Reliability: Fair
Education: Economic College, PYONGYANG (3 yr) Musical Institute (2 yr)
Physical Condition: Malnutrition (slight)

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
1 Sep 50 - Conscripted into service at HAEJU RI, HWANHAE DO, and received 30 days officers training at KMANGJU.
Oct 50 - Assigned to 110th Regt of the People’s Defense Office, at KMANG JU. Commissioned Jr Lt.
Mid Oct 50 - The 110th Regt retreated to KOKSAN (BT 9696). Unit became scattered and source observed no former 110th Regt personnel at KOKSAN, but observed approx 1,000 remnant troops there.
Oct 50 - Troops further retreated towards HUPYONG (CT 3975) and enroute source observed the II NK Corp at KARYOJU (CT2691).
11 Nov 50 - Organization of 27th Div took place at HUPYONG. Source was assigned to the 27th Div, 7th Regt, rear Hq. Estimated strength of 7th Regt was about 400 during this period.
Dec 50 - Organization completed. During the early part of Dec at ICHON (CT 1562) 300 additional Korean troops from MANCHURIA were assigned to the Regt. Day after receiving new troops the Regt engaged ROK troops at ICHON. Heard unit suffered heave casualties during 5 days of battle. But source was in the rear Hq so actual number was not known.
Dec 50 - Three days later unit moved to SIBYON MI (BT 9843) and operated with guerrilla tactics in the HAEHAI DO area.
Late Dec 50 - The 27th Div by passed HONGCH’ON (DS 0372).
2 Jan 51 - The 7th Regt entered WONJU followed by 14th Regt and 32nd Regt was held in reserve. 7th Regt met heave resistance during entry to WONJU. 1st Bn 7th Regt was completely annihilated.
3 Jan 51- 27th Div retreated to NOCHONG in groups of Regt 7th Regt remained in NOCHONG for approx. 10 days and remitted approx. 300 men whose average ages were about 40.
Mid Jan 51 - 27th Div from the V NK-Corps was transferred to the II NK Corps at PYONGCHANG (DS 4535).
16 Jan 51 - Source while enroute to PYONGCHANG became ill and deserted unit at ANHUNG MYON and remained in village for approx. 20 days.
5 Feb 51 - PW captured.

b. Organization:
27th Div: 7th, 14th, 32nd Regt, Engr Bn
7th Regt: 3 Rifle Co, Sig Co (30 men, 15 field telephones), and Ron Plat of 40 men

c. Unit Strength and Weapons: (As of 16 Jan 51)
7th Regt: 700 menBn: 200-300 men
Co: 70〃Plat:20〃
Sqd: 8〃 
All Rifle men were armed with Russ rifles with 250 rd each. One SMG Plat of approx. 30 men armed with PPSH SMG, were attached to the regt hq and called the regt guard unit.
2 Russ mortars without ammo and approx. 7 LMG in the Regt. 7th Regt had 2 HMG but had lost them both.

d. Personalities:
27th Div CG (name unk) was about 38 yr old and had bad right hand. He was about 6 ft in height, curly hair and educated in MANCHURIA. Spoke Chinese, and Russian fluently beside his native language. (Hearsay - former Regt CO in MANCHURIA.)
The former 7th Regt CO, HAN, Chang Bon was killed in an UN air attack at YANHAP DONG Dec 50.

e. Code Names and Numbers:
7th Regt: “ULCHIN GAN” 389 Unit
1st Bn: “SAZA SAN”
2nd Bn: “KOMI SAN”
3rd Bn “TOKI SAN”
Regt Rear Hq “USURI GAN”
Sig Unit: “TAEBAEK SAN”

f. Supplies:
(1) Food: Food was scarce, troops were rationed 5 solid rice cakes (MOCHI). Three meals a day. Source stated that the ricecakes were unedible due to its solidity and dryness. No supplementary food available.
(2) Ammo: No Hvy Wpn were in use due to inadequate supply of ammo. Small arms ammo were adequately furnished by higher hq. Such supplies were transported by carts. Depots and other main supply points were unk.
(3) Clothing: Clothing was scarce throughout the NKA.

g. Enemy Intention:
27th Div was to coordinate with CCF units by operating behind the UN Forces while the CCF units made frontal attacks.

h. Morale:
Morale was low throughout Regt because food and clothing were scarce and the CCF units were not advancing.
Surrender leaflets seemed to be effective among those educated and those not in agreement with the Communists.

i. Espionage Agents:
II NK Corps Hq and BAN SAN (date and location unk) observed several youths (13-15 yr old). PW heard that these youths were used as agents.
The NKA is at present educating such youths, in English (mostly slang) and their mission is to be employed by various UN units as mascots of KP.
