FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0404) 7 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: PAK, Hae Yun (ROKA)

2. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
The 8th Div was entrapped by CCF unit at YONGWON(BB9012) on 26 Nov 50 and approx. 1,000 men from 10th and 21st Regt 8th Div and 500 men from the 2nd Regt 3rd Div were captured. They were inprisoned in the school buildings located approx 8 km N or YONGWON until 29 Nov 50, then approx. 700 men were turned over to the 6th Div (NKA). Subject and approx. 300 men were turned over to the 1st Regt 6th Div. Those men were indoctrinated for 10 days and were recruited into 1st Regt.
Subject with 2 men made up their mind to escape. 1 Feb 51 one of these 3 men were on guard and realizing that their long waited chance is here. They killed their Plat Ldr and ehaded toward WONJU (DS0833) knowing that UN Forces are there.
On the way to WONJU after escape, they were stopped at 7th Div (NKA) check point on main roads at NONPHUN MYON and were asked to show their identification cards and their purpose of going to south.
Three men successfully got through the check point by telling the guards that they were from the 6th Div and going to WONJU for purpose of spying on UN Force movement in WONJU area. They were again stopped at small village which was located approx 6 km N of WONJU and again successfully deceived them.
They were captured by US soldiers about 12 km N of WONJU.

5 Jul 49 - Inducted into ROKA at SAMCHOK, SK and was assigned to the ROK 8th Div, 21st Regt, 3rd Bn, 12th Co, 3rd Plat.
26 Nov 50 - Subject was captured by CCF at YANGWON (BB9012).

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Movement:
10 Dec 50 - The 6th NKA Div was at YANGDOK (BU9644).
10 Jan 51 - The 6th Div moved to KAPCH’ON MYON.
2 Feb 51 - The 6th Div was still there when subject escaped and they were busy preparing for general attack which will take place on 8 Feb 51.

b. Organization and Strength:
6th Div was composed of 3 Regt (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). Each Regt was composed of 3 bn. Each bn was composed of 3 co, one HMG co, one mortar co, one Med co, one AT plat, and one Com sqd.

e. Enemy Intention:
Intention of 6th Div was to attack UN Forces in WONJU and HOENGSONG area from flank and rear when next general attack was to take place 8 Feb 51. Each man was advised by their commanders of the next general attack 8 Feb 51 and ordered to make preparation for it.
This will be whole front attack and CCF will make another breakthrough like last one. In this general attack they will use Arty and airplanes. Each man was ordered to prepare 7 days ration and extra socks and shoes in order to protect feet from frostbite. Each man was issued 150 to 200 rd of rile ammo and 5 hand grenades and one 82 mm mortar shell. Note: 8 Feb was the day NKA was firsat organized and considered to be important holiday.

g. Supply:
(a) Food: Locally procured. Enough food to last till end of Feb was stored in mountain and field. 3 meals daily; mainly rice and bean soup.
(b) Ammo: Each man was issued 150 to 200 rd of rifle ammo and at least 1,000 rd of 82 mm mortar shells in the 1st Regt. Each man had to carry one 82 mm mortar shell when the 6th Div moved to KAPCH’ON MYON from YANGDOK.

h. Replacements:
Large number of NK troops have been trained in Manchuria and these troops will be in North Korea as replacements within 20 days.

i. Other Units:
7th NK Div was stationed in NON PHUN MYON (approx 15 km N of WONJU).
