FIELD REPORT (Ⅸ CORPS MISD - 0244) 3 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was difficult during the early part of interrogation, but as the interrogation continued answers were given more freely. PW had little information of tactical value. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW was conscripted into the army at MUKDEN in Nov, and after receiving 5 days training left there with 148th Div. The 148th Div entered KOREA in Dec, via ANTUNG, SINUIJU and PYONGYANG.
O/a 6 Jan 51, 148th Div crossed 38th Parallel immediately north of KAESONG. Here they received replacements of 20 men per co 13 Jan 51. Between SEOUL and SUWON, they again received replacements of 20 men per co. PW stated that these replacements consisted of men who were sent back for frostbite and sickness.
14 Jan 51, 148th Div was situated 4 km N of SUWON where it stayed until 25 Jan at which time it was engaged by the UN troops. 27 Jan, they retreated because of the onslaught of the UN troops.
Because of frostbite, PW could not keep up with the rest. Wander-ing around in the mountains for five days, PW was captured at KOJONG NI on 011300 Feb by 7th ROK Regt.

b. Organization and Strength:
50th Army was composed of 148th, 149th and 150th Div. When PW separated from 148th Div, the strength was approximately 35000. 148th Div was composed of the 4th, 5th and 6th Regt with approx 1500 men apiece and Arty Bn of about 100 men.
5th Regt was composed of 3 Bn, consisting of appox 500 men per Bn, and a Heavy Weapons Company with approx. 100 men.
5th Bn was composed of 3 Co with approx 120 men each, a HMG Co with 120 men and a Recon Plat with 30 men.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
After the 148th Div was engaged with UN troops and retreated. he does not know where they went or where they planned to go.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
PW heard from his Co CO that 149th and 150th Div had entered KOREA, 20 days before 148th Div did.

e. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Supply & Equipment:
Every member of 148th Div was armed with Jap model 38 rifle and carried about 60 rd of ammo. They also carried 4 Hand Grenades each.
PW co had 6 LMG with 500 rd of ammo per gun, also two 60mm Mortar with 40 rd each.
Arty Bn attached to Div, had 5x82mm Mortars.

g. Medical:
PW stated that 10 to 12 persons ■…■ had extreme cases of frostbite and 7-8 had stomach trouble due to eating uncooked food.

h. Armor:
PW heard from his sqd ldr that there were two 30 ton tanks with the 148th Div and that they were utilized by the Regt as needed.
