2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, information considered fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission:
6 Feb 51, 10th Div Hq at PONGSANG-DONG. Arty Regt mission was to guard CP. Apparent mission of 10th Div was to organize troops there and secure food from villagers. Future mission of Div Hq unknown.

b. Strength of Unit:
25th Regt - approx 600
Arty Regt consisted of the following elements:

c. Chronology:
7 Jul 50 - Conscripted into army at YANGYANG, North KOREA. Received no military training. Arty Regt organized at CHECHONG, North KOREA.
18 Aug 50 - First fire fight 25th Regt with UN troops at KORYONGUN, KWICHOCK-TONG (near TAEGU). Engaged in 3 other fire fights before retreating north, 25 Sep 51. Abandoned 4x76mm Artillery at SONJU. 8 KIA in 4th Co.
26 Dec 50 - Set drive across 38th Parallel. PW became Co Commander’s runner.
18 Jan 51 - Arty Regt 2nd Bn received surprise attack from UN troops near TANYAN-GUN. 2 WIA, 3 MIA.
19 Jan 51 - Arty Regt ambushed by ROK troops vicinity of YONGJU (DR6675). Div CP located here. 1 WIA, 4 MIA plus 3 Russian rifles and 1 field glass.
21 Jan 51 - 25th, 27th, 29th Regt and Div Hq arrived TAEGOK-TONG (DR9258).
27 Jan 51 - 27th Regt received air attack. Village completely burnt. Marched south through mountain. Past CHIGYONGDONG (DR9832). Arty Regt assembled at TAESA-DONG(DR9826), 25th and 29th Regt was in the vicinity of SANGSA-DONG(DR9725). 10th Div CP was at HASA-DONG(DR9724).
31 Jan 51 - 25th Regt received air attack. 2nd Bn of Arty Regt retreated WNW to MOCHI-GOK(DR9627).
1 Feb 51 - Marched west avoiding enemy contact, passed KORANGDONG(DR9427). (Arty Regt CP located here 31 Jan 51). Took route south along KIRANCHONG-RI ver passing HASA-DONG(DR9624).
4 Feb 51 - Arrived PONGSAN-DONG (ER2224). Route of travel: TOPYONG-DONG(ER0216) OERYONG-DONG(ER1818), HANG-DONG(ER2219) PONGSAN-DONG(ER2224). Arty Regt CP located here. Heard 25th Regt engaged in fire fight with KMC 6 km south of PONGSAN-DONG.
5 Feb 51 - 1200, 2nd and 3rd Bn of Arty Regt received arty barrage on hill (ER1521X). Engaged in fire fight with USMC, 1700 to 1900. 1 KIA, 4 WIA in 2nd Co. Enemy dispersed, were told to assemble 6 km south of PONGSANDONG (ER2224) where Arty Regt CP was located. (4-6 Feb 51). Arty Regt and Div Hq left vicinity PONGSANDONG 6 Feb heading for SINGI (ER0802).
7 Feb 51 - 0200 PW and wounded Co CO arrived at SINGI.
8 Feb 51 - 1200 captured by KMC in village SINGI.

e. Weapons and Equipment: 2nd Bn of Arty Regt had:

Carbines - 6 approx 100 rd each
Russian Rifles - 6 per Co 50 rd each
Pistols - 6; 70 rd each
Grenades - 1 to 2 ea man
Telephones - 2 with approx 700 meters wire
Field glasses - 7 per Co (Made in Russia 1946)

f. Ammo and Supply:
No resupply of ammo. 4th Co fired approximately 100 rd since crossing 38th Parallel 26 Dec 50. Had limited supply of first aid equipment. Arty Regt took shelter in villages until 1 Feb 51. Later slept in mountains.

g. Other Elements:
4 Feb 51: 29th, 27th and 10th Div Hq were located in vicinity of OERYONG-DONG (ER1818) and HANG-DONG (ER2219) - 10th Div Hq located approximately 6 km south of PONGSANG-DONG (ER2224).

h. Morale:
Officers of the Political Co gave pep talk once or twice per week. Talk was based on the political principles for which the NK fought. The men cheered; however, in mind they were confronted by an aimless goal.

i. Weapons Feared:
Napalm bomb and artillery barrages.

j. Tactics:
Members of Arty Regt unexperienced in close combat fighting. Arty Regt mission at time of PW capture was to protect flanks, positions of the Infantry and reeducate villagers politically.

k. Psychological Warfare:
PW saw UN surrender pamphlets three times during period of movement. Soldiers were permitted to read these pamphlets; however, if caught possessing them, they were killed. One soldier was executed before the firing squad, while members of the 25th Regt and Arty Regt watched.
Political Advisors undermined UN pamphlets with the following rebuttal in his pep talk:
(1) “Let us not fall into the hands of America’s Colonization subjugation.”
(2) “American might offer us food, medical aid and other materialistic goods, but that does not cover the political phase and improvement of our national thought.”
(3) “You are poor, labor’s children, your duty is to fight for your people and your country.”
The NK troops carried 3 types of propaganda pamphlets:
(1) For American Whites.
(2) For American Negroes.
(3) For the ROK troops.
