FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0415) 10 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHONG, Se Do
AGE: 24

PLACE OF CAPTURE: PUNGSUWON (E of HOENGSONG DS 1149)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but due to short period of service in 12th Div, detailed information was limited. Reliability fair.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
24 Jul 50 - Conscripted at CHINSEN (40km E of P’YONGYANG). Approx 500 recruits departed by rail for WONSAN and then to SEOUL.
16 AUG 50 - PW escaped during air bombing of SEOUL but was captured at the CHUKCHOW River.
30 Oct 50 - Attached to 38 th Div, 1st Regt, 2nd Bn.
Nov 50 - 38th Div retreated N and only 300 men arrived KAKKGGYE, NK, and roamed about mountains in its vicinity. 300 men then marched S during UN withdrawal via WONSAN, where they were issued new winter clothing. In the vic N of HONGCHOK, group met the 12th Div on 25 Jan 51. All 300 men were integrated into the 12th Div and 10 men were assigned to the 1st Regt.
25 Jan 51 - 12th Div advanced to HOENGSONG with the 1st Regt as the forward element, 2nd and 3rd following.
1 Feb 51 - 1st Regt arrived HOENGSONG and dispatched to PUNGSUWON.
6 Feb 51 - 1st Regt engaged by friendly forces and dispersed.

5th Sqd ( 7 men): 2 PPSH with 700 rd ca (Sqd Ldr and Ass’t Sqd Ldr) 5 Russ rifles with 100-200 rd.
2nd Plat (21 men): 6 PPSH with 700 rd ca, 2 M-1 with 100 rd ca and Russ Rifles with 100-200 rd ca, 1 Russ LMG with 300 rd.
1st Co (53 men): 1 x 82mm mortar with 50 shells, 1 Russ HMG, 3 Russ LMG with 300 rd ca; other rifles.
Note: Above strength and weapons of PW unit as of 6 Feb 51. PW did not know about the other units but estimated that they were approx the same. PW departed for the front lines with 100 rd of ammo but said that those of greater physical strength were allowed to carry more, thus accounting for the 200 rd.

5. CASUALTIES:
About 15 of PW Plat suffered from frostbitten feet. 5. Th Plat 3 KIA. (Obs) PW observed the Co CO, Plat Ldr and another escaping during the fire fight.

6. TACTICS:
PW Plat was deployed in. groups of 3 or 4. About 4 to 5m apart.

7. LOCATION OF HQ:
Bn CP was about 2km to the roar of Co CP.

8. FOOD:
Before departure to front lines troops. Were issued 3 days ration of rice cakes (2 rice cakes per day). After these were consumed 2 men from the Plat were dispatched to forage.

9. MORALE:
Most of the men were weary of war but continued to fight under threat fo the death penalty. PW observed one men executed for disobedience. Troops were also told by the commanders that they would be killed when captured by UN troops, which discouraged desertions.
