1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted 030200 Feb 51. Surrendered to PUDONG MYON (ER 0925) Police Box at 0900 hours. Turned over to KMC. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Mission:
10th Div Mission: To attack weak points in the UN rear.
Sig Bn Mission: To establish communications between 10th Div.
Hq and 27th and 29th Regt.
10th Div -- usually located some 1-2 miles rear of 25th Regt.

b. Strength of Unit:
10th Div - less than 2000 as of 3 Feb 51.
Signal Bn - approx 100
Medical Bn - approx 100
Rear Guard Bn - approx. 100
Artillery Bn - approx. 600.
Code: No code was used among men in Signal Bn. Only telephone operator knew other units’ Code No.

c. Chronology:
20 Sep 50 - Inducted into ROK Army at PUSAN.
5 Jan 51 - Taken PW by Signal Bn of 10th Div at YONWON GUN, KANGWON DO. PW was then in ROK 7th Dive, 3rd Regt, 3rd Bn, 11th Co who was acting as rear guard for retreating 3rd Regt. Later heard that majority of his 11th Co personnel were captured. PW was used as laborer by Signal Bn of 10th Div which advanced during nights. Was treated well.
20 Jan 51 - Issued 1 Russian rifle and 100rd ammo throughout marching period, carrying telephone wires and ammo. 10th Div Hq received direct air attacks approximately 12 times and artillery barrage approximately 6 times during period covered. Location, No. casualties unknown.
25 Jan 51 - Signal Bn CO informed his men that 10th Div primary mission at that time was to liberate 7 miles radius of ANDONG. Signal Bn was 4 miles in the vicinity of ANDONG. 10th Div received air attacks and artillery fire almost every day.
31 Jan 51 - 10th Div moved 16 miles E of KYONGJU. Being surrounded by UN troops, 10th retreated N. Location unknown.
2 Feb 51 - Arrived CHONGSONG. Deserted unit there. Heaviest enemy fire received during this period of march.

e. Weapons and Equipment: Signal Bn had:

Russian rifles - 70; approx. 200 rd per rifle
Pistols - 2 per Co; approx 60 rd
Grenades - approx. 2 per man
1 field telephone per Co (made in USA)
4 reels of wire per Co (US and KOREA)
1 field glass per Co

f. Status of Supply; Route of Supply:
No resupply of ammo, food and clothing. Raided ROK Police Boc when in need of ammo. The wounded and officers took shelter in villages, others in the mountains. 1 Medical aid man in Co carried mercurochrome, headache and stomach ache pills and medicines for injection.

g. Other Units:
Communication among Div Hq, 27th and 29th Regt were established but location unknown.

h. Morale:
Many EM complained about lack of clothing, shoes and food. Generally ate 2 meals daily.

i. Effectiveness of Weapons:
Feared artillery barrage and air attacks above all.

j. Signal:
Hq and attached units advanced during midnight. Headquarters remained in rear, approximately 1-2 miles when in garrison. Signal Bn laid wires between Div Hq and adjacent Regt. Reeled up wire while marching during night.

k. Medical:
There were approximately 10 men to a Co who suffered from headaches, stomachaches, sore muscles and minor wounds. PW did not know of any case of infectious disease.

l. Newspaper:
10th Div Hq published weekly newspaper, SUNGNI ILBO (勝利日報) informing UN withdrawing and ultimate victory for the NK. Other news covered: CCF support, NK air force’s victories, capture all UN troops, “Now or Never”, treat civilians justly, etc.
