FIELD REPORT (3rd Div IPW - 025)　1 February 1951

PW surrendered voluntarily because he did not want to die. PW was tired of fighting wars and his only wish was to go home to his family. 25 Jan 51 Pw friend from the same unit read to him an American leaflet dropped about 20 km south of SEOUL. The leaflet read that the UN forces will assure CCF soldiers good treatment if they surrendered. This was also one of the reasons he surrendered.

b. Attitude: Fairly good

c. Background: 5 yr in CNA

d. Reliability: Fair

e. Not recommended for further interrogation because PW knowledge on tactical information is limited.

6th Co - Original (157 - about 15 Jan 51)

Present (150 - 30 Jan 51)

PW heard from his platoon leader that the 4th Field Army is composed of 10 Armies. At present only 6 Armies are here in KOREA the 38th, 39th, 40th and 50th Army. The other two are unknown. PW further heard that the 50th Army Hq is approx 4 km N of SEOUL. Detailed information of the above is unknown. One Army is said to consist of 3 Infantry Divisions, and an Artillery Division. PW heard from his platoon leader that the Artillery Div has 6 x 160mm (M1943) mortars and an unknown number of 76mm M1902/30 guns. Further details unknown. One Div consists of 3 Inf Regt and an Artillery Bn. PW heard from his platoon leader that the Artillery Bn has 8 x 76mm M1939 guns. One Regt consists of 3 Inf Bn and Mortar Co. The Mortar Co has 6 x 82mm M1937 mortars. One Bn consists of 3 Infantry Co and machine gun Co. PW say four Maxim HMG M1910 and three Japanese make mortars (knee mortars). The mortars are said to be about 2 feet in length and about 2 inches in barrel diameter. One Co consists of 3 Inf Platoons and mortar squad. Mortar squad has 2 above-mentioned Japanese type knee mortars. One mess squad is also attached to the Co. Each platoon is said to have 2 light machine guns. Type unknown.

6th Co of the 2nd Bn, 445th Regt Hq is located approx 5 km NE of YONGIN CS 3229.

PW unit, the 7th Squad, and 5 other men from the Light Machine Gun Platoon with one light machine gun, were dispatched to an area about 4 km NE of YONGIN CS 3229, and hold the position, no matter what the cost may be.

Since entering KOREA, PW Army Hq was called Ryansan Bu (兩三部). Formerly it was called the 50th Army, 49th Bu (部), for 149th Div, 1st Ryen 445 Regt, 6 Tui (隊) for 2nd Bn, 6 Fundui (分隊) for 6th Co, 3rd Pe (排) for 3rd Platoon, 7 Pan(班) for 7th Squad.
