2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition and of fair intelligence. PW were very cooperative and the information obtained is considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
50th Army composed of the 148th, 149th and 150th Div. 148th Div composed of the 442nd, 443rd, 444th Regt, a Guard Bn, an I & R, Communications Co, a Mountain Arty Bn and a Medical Co. 444th Regt composed of 3 Inf Bn, an I & R, Communications Co, a Medical Plat, a Guard Co, a 82mm Mortar Co, and an AT Co. Each bn composed of 3 rifle Co, a HMG Co, and a Communications Plat. (Atchd to Bn Hq). Each Co composed of 3 rifle platoons and a 60mm Mortar Sqd. Each platoon composed of 3 Sqd.

b. Mission:
As of 28 Jan 51, PW unit was to defend area in vic CS152275.

c. Disposition:
2nd Co CP was located approx 6 km SE of ANSAN (CS155375). The 1st Bn CP was located approx 1 km due N of the 2nd Co CP.

d. Communications:
Messengers were used for communications between Co CP and Bn CP. Telephones (type unk) were used for communications between Bn Hq and Regt Hq. Telephones and wireless were used between Regt and Div. Communication between lower units were very poor because messengers were forced to use mountain trails in order to avoid air detection.

f. Casualties:
On or about 1 Jan 51, PW Co was attacked by UN jet fighters in vic IMJIN River and suffered 19 casualties. On or about 10 Jan 51, while PW Co was resting on a hill in vic SUWON (CS2527), approx 4 UN jet fighters bombed and strafed their positions, inflicting 6 casualties.

g. Morale:
PW stated that their unit’s morale was extremely low due to the following reasons:
(1) 80% detested war.
(2) 90% were former CNA soldiers
(3) Severe UN air attacks
(4) Food and clothing supplies were extremely critical.
(5) Most of the men oppose communism.

h. Chronology
Both PW served in the CNA. The former for 4 yr with the 60th Army, 182nd Div, 56th Regt, 1st Bn, HMG Co, and the latter for 2 yr with the 15th Army, 169th Div, 507th Regt. The former was captured by the CCF and was integrated into the CCF at CHANGCHUNG (長春) in Oct 49, while the latter was captured and integrated into the CCF o/a 25 Nov 49 at HUPEI (湖北). Both arrived in ANTUNG on 26 Nov 50. On the following day their unit crossed the YALU River into SINUIJU. 15 Dec 50, their unit arrived in vic P’YONGYANG. 26 Dec 50, the 1st Bn passed SEOUL and crossed the HAN River (exact location unk) over the ice on foot and arrived approx 4 miles SE of ANSAN (CS155275) on 28 Jan 51. PW were captured in vic ANSAN 30 Jan 51 by elements of the 35th RCT.

4. GENERAL:
a. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food procured locally. Clothing not issued since the unit came to KOREA. Ammo issued prior to crossing the border. Each rifleman received 100 rd and 4 handgrenades. Each LMG had 1,000 rd and each 60mm mortar had 30 rd.

b. Foreign Technicians:
Each Bn had approx 3 Koreans serving as interpreters.

c. Medical:
They did not receive any type of immunization. 28 Jan 51, PW heard from their platoon leader that malaria was a common disease among the troops. Two pills (type unk) were given three times a day to malaria victims. PW heard from a medical aidman that a truckload of medical supplies and rubber boots arrived prior to their capture.
