2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was a farmer prior to entering the CNA. PW was cooperative but of below average intelligence and had poor memory. Information obtained is fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
39th Army composed of the 114th, 115th and 116th Div, and Arty Regt.
115th Div composed of the 344th, 345th and 346th Regt.
344th Regt composed of 3 Rifle Bn.
3rd Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co and LMG Co.
9th Co composed of 3 Rifle Plat and Mortar Plat.
1st Plat composed of 3 Rifle Sqd and LMG Sqd.

Casualties from UN air strike - One; PW - one.
PW heard from his Co CO that there are six arty pieces (type unk) in the Arty Regt. There were 3 LMG in the LMG Co (attached to the 3rd Bn). The Mortar Plat (attached to 9th Co) had 3 x 60mm mortars. The LMG Sqd (attached to 1st Plat) had 3 LMG. The rest of the troops were armed with Japanese and Chinese made rifles.

b. Disposition:
O/a 19 Jan 51, 39th Army was moving east of SEOUL.
One Div (designation unk) of the 50th Army (code name: 1st Bn) was in the 7-8 miles NW of SUWON (CS2527) 28 Jan 51.

c. Communications:
Communication between Army, Div, and Regt was by means of telephones and between Bn and lower headquarters runners.

d. Personalities:
LI, Fnu (李) - Plat Ldr, 1st Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 344th Regt.

e. Armor:
PW did not see or hear of any tanks or any other armored equipment.

f. Artillery:
PW did not see any arty pieces.

g. Morale:
Approx 90% of the men’s morale in PW unit was low due to lack of food, insufficient clothing, fear of air attacks, hatred for communism and fighting.

h. Chronology:
PW volunteered into the CNA on 5 Aug 49. Captured by the CCF 4 Oct 49 at KWANGSI (廣西省) and was integrated into the 39th Army the same day. PW arrived at ANTUNG with the 39th Army o/a 15 Jul 50. The unit remained at ANTUNG until 3 Sep 50. The 39th Army crossed the border on 3 Sep 50 on foot arriving at SINUIJU the same day. 39th Army arrived at SEOUL o/a 19 Jan 51 taking the west coast route. From SEOUL, the 39th Army headed east over a mountain route and marched for 2 days, when PW lost contact with his unit. After losing contact with his unit for 5 days, PW walked over mountain trails to SUWON (CS2527) 26 Jan 51. PW planned to go to INCHON so he asked a Chinese civilian for directions to INCHON. At SUWON, PW heard the US Army had landed at INCHON and was going to surrender to the US Army. Approx 7-8 miles NW of SUWON, PW was apprehended by elements of the CCF 50th Army. PW remained with them (code No: 1st Bn) until capture (28 Jan 51).

i. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food was insufficient. Ever since crossing the border, no food came from CHINA. Troops ate Korean food once or twice a day. No ammo came from CHINA since crossing the border. Each LMG had 200 rd of ammo when crossing the border. When PW lost contact with his unit o/a 21 Jan 51, each LMG still had 200 rd of ammo. Each man carried 3 hand grenades.

j. Replacements:
PW did not see any replacements in his unit.

k. Psychological Warfare:
About a month ago, o/a 28 Dec 50, PW saw a UN surrender leaflet in NORTH KOREA. Since then he had intended to surrender, but had not had a chance to desert.

l. Foreign Technicians:
There were two Chinese interpreters (Koreans) in the Regt Hq.

m. Medical:
PW was immunized once in CHINA while with the CCF 39th Army in Aug 50 (type unk).

n. Bridging Equipment:
When PW and his unit crossed the HAN River it was frozen and no bridging equipment was used or seen.

o. Effectiveness of Night Bombing:
PW witnessed only one night bombing, east of SEOUL, night of 19 Jan 51. The bombing resulted in five casualties.

4. REMARKS:
PW was previously interrogated by the 25th Div IPW Team.
