2. ASSESSMENT:
cooperative. PW was suffering from a gunshot wound in his right shoulder, broken fingers on his left hand, and a racking cough.
Because PW has had no education and was given very little opportunity to learn details about his unit or other units, information is limited. Reliability seems to be fair.

Casualities and losses of equipment were a direct result of attack by US ground forces 8 Feb 51 in vicinity of CS0742.

4. LOCATIONS AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS: (as of 8 Feb 51)
1st Regt Hq, 8th Div was located in the mountains approx 16 km south of SEOUL 8 Feb 51.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted into NKA 1 Sep 50 at SARIWON (YC4064), received no training and was assigned to no unit.
Departed from SARIWON during Sep 50, marched with approx 500 recently conscripted recruits (traveling at night only, over mountain trails) and arrived at CH'OSAN (YF3624) during Oct 50. There, PW was assigned to 1st Regt, 8th Div and received two months training in close order drill, manual of arms and military courtesy. During the first part of Dec 50, the 1st Regt 8th Div was issued cotton-padded winter uniforms, M1891/30 rifles, and 200 rounds of ammunition per rifleman.
PW departed from CH'OSAN early Dec 50 with 8th Division, marched (at night only) over mountain trails and secondary roads, traveling via the following route:

PW departed from SEOUL o/a 26 Jan 51 with 8th Div, marched (at night only) across the frozen HAN River (approx 2 km east of the RR Bridge) and arrived at YONGDUNGP'O (CS1654) o/a Jan 51.
Departed from YONGDUNGP'O o/a 28 Jan 51, marched (at night only) over mountain trails with 1st Regt 8th Division and arrived at a village approx 16 km south of SEOUL 7 Feb 51. There the 1st Regt was shelled by UN Arty and mortar fire on 8 Feb 51. PW was wounded seriously and was abandoned by the men of his unit who fled into the mountains, to the immediate north. PW was captured by the advancing US 24th RCT at 081200 I Feb 51.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
The 8th Div received approx 500 untrained conscripts during Oct 50 while the Div was at CH'OSAN. These recruits were conscripted by the NKA from HWANGHAE DO province shortly before the NKA began its retreat Sep 50. The 8th Div also has hundreds of other soldiers who have had little or no training. These men were forced to "volunteer" for the NKA while it was in SOUTH KOREA during the latter part of Aug 50.

7. AMMO, FOOD AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
1st Regt 8th Division personnel, received two bowls of rice plus "kimchee" (Korean pickle) and soy sauce daily. These rations were obtained by dispatching a detail of men from the Regt to nearby villages where the food was confiscated from farmers.
1st Regt 8th Division received cotton-padded winter uniforms, M1891/30 rifles, and 200 rounds of ammunition per rifleman, while the division was at CH'OSAN Dec 50. These supplies were rumored to have come from MANCHURIA.

8. SIGNAL:
The 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 1st Regt, 8th Div had a field telephone which was used for communication with 3rd Bn CP.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Both the morale and combat efficiency of the 1st Regt 8th Division were low because the personnel lacked sufficient training and clothing. At least 50% of the men were suffering from frost bite.

10. MEDICAL:
No disease in the 8th Div although no NKA personnel have received immunization shots during PW period of service with the NKA. (1 Sep 50 to 8 Feb 51).
At least half of the 1st Regt 8th Division was suffering from frost bite. Practically all of the men in the 1st Regt had colds and coughs.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was seriously wounded and then captured by the US 24th RCT.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW observed leaflets dropped approx 12 km south of SEOUL o/a 3 Feb 51.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. No.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. PW considered the UN leaflets to be interesting because they aroused his curiosity. He felt that the leaflets did not concern him because he saw no opportunity for escape from the NKA.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. No.

12. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW observed several thousand CCF soldiers in SEOUL and directly south of SEOUL 26 to 28 Jan 51. Some of the CCF soldiers in SEOUL were marching south while others were apparently marching north. None of the CCF soldiers seemed to be bivouacing. The CCF soldiers directly south of SEOUL were marching south.
