FIELD REPORT (521 - LDI - 0383)　30 January 1951

Cooperative and spoke freely. Information reliable.

2 Jul 50: Entered #1 OCS (Arty) at P'YONGYANG.

22 Jul 50: Graduated and appointed 2nd Lt.

27 Jul 50: Assigned to 18th Brig, 2nd Bn, 45mm AT Gun Co at CHORWON.

10 Aug 50: 18th Brig redesigned 10th Div at SEOUL.

15 Sep 50: Wounded at INCHON and evacuated to 19th Fd Hosp at SEOUL

18 Sep 50: Promoted to 1st Lt, assigned to 32nd Brig, 2nd Bn, Hvy Wpns Co at SUWON and moved to CHORWON.

Early Oct 50 : 32nd Brig redesignated 32nd Div.

23 Oct 50: Separated from 32nd Div and joined 38th Div at HAGARU RI.

Mid Nov 50: 38th Div retreated to CHILPYON (126-10 41-20) and reorganized.

20 Nov 50: 38th Div started to move south along Mt pass via YANGDOK, KOKSAN, PYONGGANG, and HWACHON.

O/a 15 Jan 51 : 38th Div arr HOENGSONG.

20 Jan 51: 38th Div arr SANERI (4 kms east of HONGCHON) and ordered to deactivate.

21 Jan 51: Approx 400 troops of the 105th Unit, II Corps, arrived in village with large church approx 500 m north of 38th Div bivouac area. 70% to 80% of troops dressed in civilian clothing. 50% equipped with Russian rifles. A few PPSH SMG observed. CG, 38th Div departed for Supreme Hq and C of S, 38th Div assigned to 27th Div as C of S.

23 Jan 51: 43 officers from 38th Div, Trng Bn, transferred to 43rd Div Hq, located 4 km north of HOENGSONG. PW told by Chief, G-1 section, that the 43rd Div has also been ordered to deactivate and that its 43 officers will report to the 12th Div at SANERI. PW was left behind alone (suffering from stomach ailment and malnutrition unable to walk) in a farmer's home north of HOENGSONG, and told to go to SANERI as soon as he recovered.

25 Jan 51: Captured by UN patrol in same farmer's home.

50% of Inf troops equipped with various types of rifle.

All troops carry approx 100 rd of ammo and 1 hand grenade.

2/MG in 1st Regt and 1 in 2nd Regt (hearsay).

1 radio and field telephone.

No mortars or guns.

Duties of Officers: To train and indoctrinate ROK PW and Korean civilians converted on the way. No EM were assigned to this Bn. During entire period, PW was with this unit.

Only two officers armed with pistols; 1/3 of them had one hand grenade; 2 carried PPSH SMG; others were unarmed.

(1) O/a 20 Jan 51 PW was told by Trng Bn CO that Div was to rest for 10 days.

(2) O/a 22 Jan 51 Trng Bn CO told a group of officers that 4th Phase of operations will begin 1 Feb 51, at which time planes, tanks and guns will be used. Also told that the third phase employed tactics of envelopment--the II Corps advancing as far south as the 36th parallel, but that the 4th Phase will be an all out concerted attack which will end the war.

Mid Dec 50 PW heard that all ROK PW will be handled by the NKA and that US PW will be taken care of by the CCF.

Early Dec 50 Political officer told Div that 15,000 Japanese landed at INCHON and that they will either be used to transport supplies and equipment for the retreating US army or will be associated with the ROK government.

PW was never vaccinated and never received any innoculation while in the NKA. He had heard of no one receiving any such treatment.
