FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0103) 3 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHANG I Song (26)
RANK: Ass't Plat Ldr
UNIT: 42nd Army, 125th Div, 374th Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co, 1st Plat
PLACE & DATE OF CAPTURE: Vic of CS8342, 2 Feb 51

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and appeared quite positive of his answers. The following information seems fairly reliable.
Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Circumstances of Capture:
PW was wounded in the leg 1 Feb 51 on Hill in vic of CS8342 when the 374th Regt engaged the US 23rd Inf.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
The estimated strength of 125th Div as of 31 Jan 51 was 10,000. Div composed of 373rd, 374th and 375th Regt, and an Arty Bn.
All of 125th Div was in and around PORYONG-NI since 29 Jan 51 resting and preparing for an attack. The 374th Regt left the area first 31 Jan 51.
The combat troop strength of the 374th Regt as of 1 Feb 51 was estimated at approx 3,000, all armed with Jap model 38 rifles and captured US M-1 rifles and carbines with an average of 50 rd of ammo each. The following were also observed with the 374th Regt: 12 x 82mm mortars (approx 30 rd ea), 2 x 60mm mortars (approx 30 rd ea), 18 HMG (approx 2,000 rd ea), 54 LMG (approx 800 rd ea). Each man issued 3 hand grenades.
There were also 1,000 Service Troops of the 374th Regt who were located at PORYONG-NI (approx 40 km N of CS8342) as of 31 Jan 51. The 125th Div Hq was also located here as of this date.

c. Unit Intentions:
PW claims that the objective of 374th Regt was CHOBYON-NI (CS7538) which they were to take in one day.
30 Jan 51 PW heard from his Co CO that the objective of the 125th Div was to attack CHOBYON-NI and if successful, they were to continue south but if they failed, they were to return to PORYONG-NI.

d. Unit Location:
When the 374th Regt was advancing toward hill in vic of CS8342, PW heard from his Co CO that the 373rd and 375th Regt were on the flanks. Which Regt was on which flank was not mentioned.

e. Personalities:
42nd Army CO: WOO, (Fnu)
125th Div CO: WANG, Tou Chuan
374th Regt CO: YANG Tsen
2nd Co CO: SUEN Lien San
Troops all in winter uniforms.

f. Food:
Food was obtained from civilians in villages but the troops were always complaining among themselves of the insufficient food.

g. Morale:
PW claims that all the troops want to go home because they are hit by UN Air Force during the day, have to march at night and because of insufficient food.

h. Medical:
An estimated 30 out of 2nd Co are suffering from a bad case of frost-bite. About 1/2 of the remaining are suffering from slight case of frozen feet. It was heard that the frost-bitten cases of other companies were about on the same ratio. Bad cases of frost-bites were evacuated to the rear o/a 1 Jan 51.
5 or 6 out of 2nd Co were isolated in a separate room because of an unk sickness and no visitors were allowed as of 31 Jan 51.
