FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0183) 9 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be in good physical condition at time of interrogation. PW was very cooperative and of average intelligence. Info obtained is considered fairly reliable. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at FUNCHIENSONG LINGSON-SHIEN May 47. Captured by elements of the CCF at HAINAN Island 23 Apr 50. Immediately confined at PWE located in KWANGTUNG and received Communist indoctrination for approx 5 months. Assigned to 38th Army, 114th Div, 342nd Regt, 2nd Bn, MG Co on Sep 50. Date of crossing into N KOREA u/k. The 342nd Regt crossed the 38th parallel 1 Jan 51 and arrived 20 km N SEOUL 4 Jan 51. At this location the 342nd Regt bivouacked for approx 20 days to receive replacements. During this period heard from political leader that CCF replacements will be assigned to the 342nd Regt. No CCF replacements arrived during this period. The 2nd Bn departed this location o/a 24 Jan 51 and proceeded S crossing frozen HAN River on or about 31 Jan 51 arriving at present location on or about 060200 Feb 51. Immediately upon arrival the entire 2nd Bn (400 men) armed with 2x82mm mortars, 6x60mm mortars, 5 - HMG, 18 - LMG, and 2 - US Bazookas was deployed along u/k mountain and was told to hold this position at all cost. The 6th Co was dug in to the right (E) of the 4th and 5th Co to the left (W) of the 4th Co. 1 MG Plat was integrated into each Inf Co upon arrival. 2nd Bn CP located approx 8 km generally N from place of capture. No knowledge of regt CP. No UN troops engaged by 2nd Bn prior to deserting his unit.

The 114th Div consists of 340th, 341st and 342nd Regt and 1 Arty Bn. 3 Bn in each Regt. Each Bn composed of 3 Inf Co and Hv Wpn Co. Strength and wpn on Arty Bn u/k.

All others armed with US BAR, M-1 rifles, Jap rifles (type 38), Carbines. 4 hand grenades per man. After crossing 38th Parallel heard from political leader that the 342nd Regt will be equipped with recoiless weapons (cal u/k).

d. Intentions:
Present mission of 2nd Bn is to hold present position at all cost. No knowledge of future intentions of PW unit or other CCF units.

e. Food & Ammo:
Food locally procured from villagers. No knowledge of supply points. Each individual issued BO rifle rd approx 20 days ago. No knowledge of ammo supply points. No knowledge of length of time they can operate without being resupplied.

f. Other Units:
PW heard from political leader that the 39th, 40th, 42nd and 50th Armies crossed the 38th Parallel. Locations of above mentioned armies u/k. No knowledge of the 39th, 40th, 42nd and 50th Armies crossing the HAN River.

g. Morale:
Approx 75 percent of troops demoralized and have no desire to fight due to lack of food and incessant air and arty bombardment. Many suffering from frost bitten feet. No knowledge of communicable disease prevailing among CCF troops.

h. Psychological Warfare:
Q. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
A. Yes. After crossing the 38th Parallel I realized that we were fighting a fruitless war. Planned to surrender at the first opportunity.
Q. Did you see any leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcast?
A. Yes. I picked up a “Good Conduct Pass” prior to crossing 38th parallel and hid it in the lining of my quilted jacket. At time of surrender I surrendered with a good conduct pass. Also heard loudspeaker broadcast on or about 061600 Feb 51. The speech was inaudible due to the distance from the origin of broadcast. UN leaflets or broadcasts were never discussed among troops for fear of being reprimanded by our superiors.

i. Knowledge of UN PW:
Observed approx 500 UN PW being marched N at approx 80 km N of 38th Parallel. Observed PW prior to crossing 38th Parallel.
