ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3346　13 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0182)　8 February 1951

PW was captured by elements of “A” Co, 1st Bn, 19th RCT. PW was suffering from S/A wound on right arm received during conflict on 081200 Feb 51. Cooperative and of average intelligence. Although PW states that he did not receive any education, he seems to be well informed and a man of some education. Prior to enlistment in the Army PW was aiding his parents who was a merchant. Information obtained should be assessed accordingly. PW was a former Chinese Nationalist soldier.

PW crossed the YALU River o/a 25 Nov 50 with the entire 38th Army and crossed the 38th Parallel on 1 Jan 51. O/a 30 Jan 51 the 38th Army crossed the HAN River at YONGDOPO and proceeded to Hill 392 CS 599391. PW heard from his Co officer that the whole 38th Army was bivouacking in the mountains in that vic and that they will soon start an offensive. On 6-8 Feb 51 PW unit was under hvy arty and air bombardment. PW was ordered not to withdraw under no circumstances. If they should, they would be shot. Due to hvy bombardment many were killed and many chose to commit suicide because they were not able to advance or retreat. PW actually saw 3 cases of suicide. At time PW was wounded his Co of 150 men were cut down to 12 men. PW estimates 85 percent of casualty was caused by arty fire. 081200 Feb 51 PW was shot in right arm and taken prisoner by elements of 1st Bn, 19th RCT.

113th Div: 337th, 338th and 339th Regt.

2nd Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co and Hvy Wpn Co.

1st Plat: 3 - SMG, 3 - LMG, 4 grenades per man, rifles.

Hvy Wpn Co: 4 - mort (larger than 60mm - US made). None at present. 1 - HMG at present.

Observed 6 US PW near 38th Parallel (location u/k).

Saw leaflet but unable to read. Content of leaflet never discussed among troops. Heard no broadcasts.

Food procured locally. 120 rifles rd ea man on hand.

No knowledge of Regt or Div CP. 2nd Bn CP was located 12 km E of Hill 392 (exact location u/k). 5th Co CP was located 800 m SE of Hill 392.

Due to cold weather, frostbitten feet, lack of food and arty and aerial bombardment, morale of men was low. Many thinking of going home.

5th Co was to defend Hill 392.
