FIELD REPORT (2 Div-LDI-0092) 29 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LEE Kun Hae (22)
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Rice Carrier for 6th NKA Div, 661st Unit
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURED: 27 Jan 51 at WONJU

2. ASSESSMENT:
Informant was very cooperative. Since he was formerly a member of a reconnaissance unit in the ROK Army, he was very observing and alert, but in many cases his being a PW limited his chances of obtaining information. The following information seems fairly reliable and much weight can be put on it.
Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
O/a 27 Nov 50 captured by CCF YONGWON.
O/a 5 Dec 50 escaped and re-captured by NKA 2nd Corps at PUKCHANG.
O/a 8 Dec 50 escaped.
O/a 15 Dec 50 captured by NKA 6th Div CP at KOKSAN.
O/a 22 Dec 50 escaped at PYONGGANG.
O/a 25 Dec 50 captured by 657th Unit at KUMHWA.
O/a 2 Jan 51 escaped vic of 38th Parallel.
O/a 11 Jan 51 captured by 661st Unit on hill vic DS1397.
26 Jan 51 escaped at HOENGSONG.

b. Unit Organization:
661st Unit CP was located in village along narrow road 6 Km directly North of HOENGSONG as of 2300 hr 26 Jan 51.
657th Unit CP was located in village over next hill from 661 Unit CP 3 Km to East as of 19 Jan 51.
6th Div CP (code number 655 - heard from guard) was located 5 Km Northeast of 661st Unit CP as of 19 Jan 51.
Heard from guard watching over informant that the 659th Unit CP was loc to East of Div CP.
The est strength of 661st Unit was between 700 to 800 with 89% armed with Jap model 99 rifles, Russian rifles (both 100-150 rd ea) and SMG (2 circular magazines), 5 or 6 x 82mm mortars (total ammo approx 160 rd) and 4 or 5 HMG were also observed.
The strength, weapon and ammo supplies of 657th Unit are estimated to be the same as 661st Unit.

c. UN PW:
18 Jan 51 approx 30 US PW were observed from a distance of about 300 meters, 12 Km North of HOENGSONG, being marched in single file north. All were wearing shoes and either field jackets, overcoats or parkas, but with exception on 7 or 8 who were wearing pile caps, the others had no head gear.

d. Unit Location:
The following info overheard from guards 23 Jan 51: 7th Div was observed heading East on HOENGSONG-KANGNUNG (DS9278) road.
III Corps is in KUMHWA (CT6638).
6th Div is resting for 70 days.
During one of indoctrination periods, informant asked why 6th Div was resting and was told that it did not retreat but withdrew to make full preparation and complete rest and then would attack.

e. Food:
PW estimates from observation that 6th Div has 2 months supply of rice.

f. Medical:
O/a 16 Jan 51 the guard warned all PW to be very cautious since there was an epidemic of typhus and fever.
None of these cases were observed by informant.
Many are suffering from frost bite.
