ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3336　13 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MID - 0223)　23 January 1951

PW very cooperative during interrogation. He was very observant and had a good memory. Information is considered reliable. PW not recommended for further interrogation.

377th Regt crossed PUKHANG River from CHONGPYONG-NI (CS6177) 030100 Jan 51. It travelled by mountain trails at night, arriving approx 5 km north of YANGPYONG (CS6749) 12 Jan 51, where it spent 3 days. Regt then took same route and returned to CHONPYONG 15 Jan 51.

16 Jan 51, PW heard his Co Executive Officer that 3rd Bn was ordered to YANGPYONG area for 15 days, with 40 troops dispatched from Regt Hq, to procure 400 tons of rice. 3rd Bn was furnished oxcarts or sleds to transport the rice to Regt CP after it had been obtained by these 40 men.

17 Jan 51, Bn left for YANGPYONG and arr approx 5 km Northwest of YANGPYONG 180400 Jan 51.

While travelling, PW heard from supply officer that they were going to IPO-RI to locate 125th Div supply depot and to find out how and where it obtained its food supplies. The supply officer had received these instructions when he left Regt Hq.

Upon arrival at IPO-RI, they spent 30 minutes looking for 125th Div, but were unable to locate it in the village. PW and 5 others then rested at a farmer’s house.

211300 Jan 51, the supply officer and 3 other men left the house, apparently in search of some food for supper. While they were gone, PW heard tanks approaching the village. Figuring there was no chance of escape, he and one other surrendered to a patrol of US 5th RCT 211500 Jan 51.

42nd Army composed of the 124th, 125th, and 126th Div. 126th Div is composed of the 376th (Code No 107), 337th (Code No 105), 378th (Code No 109) Regt, and Arty Bn.

The 337th Regt strength approx 1,600 men. It is composed of 1st (Code No 561), 2nd (Code No 562), 3rd (Code No 563) Rifle Bn, Arty Btry, Regt Guard Co, Sig Plat, and Med Plat.

3rd Rifle Bn strength was 400 men. It is composed of 7th (Code No 679), 8th (Code No 680), 9th (Code No 681) Rifle Co and Hv Wpn Co.

9th Rifle Co strength was approx 100 men. It composes 3 rifle Plat and 60 mm mortar plat.

Ea Rifle Plat strength was 24 men. Each Plat has 4 rifle Sqd.

Ea rifle Co was armed with 3 x 60 mm mortars (25 rd ea), 6 LMG (800 to 1,000 rd ea), automatic rifles, Jap 38 rifles (70 rd ea), and 3 grenades for ea man.

Hv Wpn Co has 5 HMG (1,500 rd ea), 3 82 mm mortars (40 rd ea), and 15 horses.

1st Rifle Bn had 3 US Bazookas, 3 x 82 mm mortars, 60 mm mortars, LMG, and 17 horses.

Regt Arty Btry had 3 M92 guns, 3 heavy mortars, 2 anti-tank guns and 20 horses.

Div Arty Bn had 6 guns.

As of 17 Jan 51, 377th Regt CP was loc at hill (400 meters high) approx 7 km northeast of CHONPYONG-NI and 200 meters west of a main road which runs to CHUNCHON at this point.

PW heard from Co Exec Officer that 377th Regt will rest 2 month at its present location.

377th Regt CO: CHU (fnu) (朱), age 30.

3rd En CO: KOU (fnu) (高), age 28.

9th Co CO: SUN Tou Chai (宋■才), age 25.

9th Co Political and Culture Officer: WONG Tu Chon(王■成), age 20.

PW heard from Co CO that a large number of replacements have already left MANCHURIA for KOREA and that they were expected at Regt CP very shortly.

On 210100 Jan 51, PW and 5 others met 200 CCF troops 1 km northeast of IPO-RI. When group inquired about 125th Div CP, they found out that these troops were elements of 125th Div transporting rice to their Hq, located approx 3 km north of that point.
