PW was cooperative and talked freely.
Information seems fairly reliable.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
1st Regiment, 9th Division, II NKA Corps was last seen in TUNNAE MYON (DS 3148), 25 Jan 51.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted 2 July 50 at PYONGYANG SHI (YD 3922) along with approx. 2,000 conscriptees. Without receiving any training, PW was assigned to 104th Regiment.
Travelled to KOSONG (DP 3969) from P’YONGYANG, via the following route:

Upon arriving at KOSONG, 104th Regt was used as a guard unit along coast line until 12 Aug 50.
104th Regt was disorganized at KOSONG (DP3969), when UN Forces started its offensive.
After unit dissolved, PW and 13 other comrades retreated north passing thru SOBAEK-SAN (小白山) via mountains and village, and arr KUMHWA (CT6738) 20 Sep 50.
When 9th Div of II Corps was reorganized in KUMHWA, PW was assigned to 9th Div, 1st Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co, 1st Plat, 1st Sqd as a sqd leader 20 Sep 50.
9th Div moved to P’YONGGANG (CT5253) and set up defensive positions on mountains for approx 5 days.
Division moved to CHORWON (CT4335) and performed similar work for approx 6 days.
Div dep CHORWON 31 Sep 50 and proceeded south.
3 Jan 51, div arr P’YONGCHANG (DS4635).
5 Jan 51, div arr YONGWOL (DS5414) and remained 5 days.
Div was forced to retreat from YONGWOL (DS5414) because of stiff UN resistance. PW believed that Division was not engaged in any battle at YONGWOL.
25 Jan 51, while passing TUNNAE-MYON (DS3148), PW was separated from his unit because of illness.
While hospitalized at farmer’s home, PW was captured 4 Jan 51 by ROK troops.

6. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained from farmers, and deserted villages wherever 9th Div passed.
Troops usually carried 3 days food supply while marching.
9th Div did not receive any food and ammo supplies from rear since departing south Oct 50.

7. SIGNAL:
There were 2 wireless sets in the Regt Hq.
Above Bn level, field telephones were used.

8. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale was very low in PW unit because a large number of troops were suffering from colds brought about by exposure to the elements.

9. MEDICAL:
About 50% of troops in 9th Div were suffering from frost bitten and frozen feet. Troops were never treated, due to lack of medicine.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW did not surrender voluntarily but was captured while recuperating in a farmer’s home.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
