FIELD REPORT (521-MISDI-No Number) 29 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE, Kun Hae (ROKA)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW talked freely. Information seems reliable.

3. MOVEMENT:
O/a 28 Nov 50: Captured by CCF vicinity YONGWON with approx 700 ROK, including the CO of 1st Bn, 10th Regt, 8th ROK Div.
2 Dec 50: Escaped with 3 others.
7 Dec 50: Arr PUKCHANG and captured by NK II Corps troops.
10 Dec 50: Escaped with another ROK soldier.
15 Dec 50: Arr KOKSAN and captured by NK 6th Div Hq troops. There were approx 200 ROK PW here. Moved south.
22 Dec 50: Escaped with another ROK soldier.
28 Dec 50: Arr PYONGGANG (CT 5153) and captured by unk NK unit. Escaped on same day during air raid.
1 Jan 51: Arr KUMHWA (CT 6639) and captured by NK 6th Div, 657 Unit. Moved south with them.
7 Jan 51: Escaped while 657 Unit was engaged with UN troops.
13 Jan 51: Captured by NK 6th Div, 661 Unit, east of CHUNCHON (CS 8992). Moved south with them.
17 Jan 51: Arr HOENGSONG (DS 1149).
21 Jan 51: Arr rest area 10 km north of HOENGSONG.
27 Jan 51: Escaped and captured by 9th Inf, 2nd Div.

4. TREATMENT AND INDOCTRINATION OF ROK PW:
NK and CCF troops confiscate PW personal belongings while their officers are not looking.
PW were briefly interrogated without threat or bodily harm.
Quality and quantity of food same as that received by NK soldiers.
Indoctrination lecture topics are as follows: Overthrow of the SYNGMAN RHEE Government, Military Might of RUSSIA, Capitalism versus labor, Our Strong Ally-The CCF. These subjects are discussed from various points of view by Political Officers and are repeated over and over. Lectures usually last about 2 hr. PW are allowed to express their opinions on the corrupt government of South KOREA and the barbaric American soldiers.
ROK troops deemed to have been fairly well indoctrinated are given rifles and assigned to units.
Guarding of ROK PW was very lax. It is easy to escape at night and there were many escapes. Guards become strict for two or three nights after someone escaped but soon become lax because of the tiresome night marches.

5. SANITARY MEASURES:
Troops are cautioned not to eat food found in villages.
Underwear of all troops and PW boiled in water every 7 to 10 days.
All troops and PW are given short haircuts as a preventive measure against lice.

6. HEARSAY:
O/a 22 Jan 51 the 6th Div was to begin a 70 day rest 10 km north of HOENGSONG.
The 4th phase of operations will begin after this rest period, with airplanes and tanks from RUSSIA and CHINA to be used. Koreans are now being trained at TSILIN, MANCHURIA as pilots and tank crews. In the meantime partisan units will cause disorder and riots to the rear of the enemy.
O/a 22 Jan 51 the NK 7th Div passed through HOENGSONG and headed east.
O/a 23 Jan 51 the NK III Corps was located at KUMHWA.
O/a 18 Jan 51 sign with #43 and arrow-pointing north was observed 6 km north of HOENGSONG.
