2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative; PW was suffering from a gunshot wound in the right thigh. Had little knowledge of military units above company level. He was especially uncertain about dates. Information is very limited and seems only fairly reliable.

Losses were a direct result of attacks by UN ground forces 1 and 2 Feb 51.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
38th, 39th, 40th, and 42nd CCF Armies were in SEOUL during the latter part of Dec 50.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted into the CNA 25 April 48 in CHILIN SHENG (吉林省). He surrendered to the CCF during Oct 48 in CHILIN SHENG when the entire 60th CNA Army capitulated to the CCF. He received 1 yr of communist political indoctrination with a group of 130 other ex-CNA soldiers. In the meantime, during Dec 46, the former 60th CNA Army was redesignated as the 50th CCF Army and PW was incorporated into the Army along with thousands of other ex-60th CNA Army soldiers.
PW departed from CHILIM SHEN 13 Jan 49, by train with the entire 50th Army and arrived in HONAN SHENG (河南省).
PW departed from HONAN SHENG, with the 50th Army, and arrived in HUPEI SHENG (河北省) July 49.
PW departed from SSUCHUAN SHENG Aug 49 with the 50th Army, and arrived in SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省) Nov 49.
PW departed from SSUCHUAN SHENG Feb 50, by Chinese rowboat down the YANGTZE River and up the YUNBO (River), arriving in HUPEI SHENG 27 March 50.
PW departed from HUPEI SHENG, by train with the 149th Division, and arrived LIAOHSI SHENG (遼西省) o/a 16 Oct 50.
PW departed from LIAOHSI SHENG o/a 26 Oct 50, by train with the 149th Div, and arrived ANTUNG (安東) during the afternoon of 28 Oct 50.
PW departed from ANTUNG during the night of 28 Oct 50, marched with 149th Div over a large automobile bridge across the YALU River, and arrived at SINUIJU (XE1839) 28 Oct 50.
PW departed from SINUIJU during the night of 29 Oct 50, 149th Div arrived at the outskirts of P'YONGYANG (YD3822).
PW departed from the outskirts of P'YONGYANG, with 149th Division, (crossing over the frozen TAEDONG River), and arrived at SEOUL.
PW departed from SEOUL, with 149th Div 30 Dec 50, (marching at night only), crossing over the frozen HAN River, and arrived in the mountains approx 7 km north of SUWON during the first part of Jan 51.
There, the 149th Div was attacked by UN forces on 1 Feb 51, and 149th Div started to withdraw. The division was attacked again on 2 Feb 51 approx 20 km north of SUWON. PW was wounded by small arms fire and was captured 021600 I Feb 51 by the US 65th RCT.

6. PERSONALITIES:
YEH, Tzu Hsin (菜子信), Plat Ldr, 2nd Plat, 7th Co, 3rd Bn, 46th Regt 149th Div.
CHANG, Hsueh Kai (張學開), Ass't Plat Ldr, 2nd Plat, 7th Co, 3rd Bn, 46th Regt, 149th Div.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
149th Div has received no replacements since coming to KOREA 29 Oct 50.

8. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
149th Div personnel subsisted on confiscating food.
149th Div personnel were issued cotton-padded winter uniforms in HUPEI SHENG, China, during the latter part of the summer of 1950.
They were issued ammunition at the same time and have not replenished their ammo supplies since.

9. SIGNAL:
3rd Bn, 46th Regt of the 149th Div has one Field telephone.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of the 46th Regt was low because 90% of the personnel were former CNA soldier and do not like the CCF. PW considered most of the men well trained, physically fit and capable of efficient operation in combat.

11. UN PW:
PW observed about 20 captured American soldiers o/a 1 Jan 51, approx 5 km south of SEOUL. Soldiers were halted on a mountain trail and were being guarded by CCF Platoon.

12. MEDICAL:
PW noted no disease in the 149th Division.
Each man was inoculated Apr 50. Each man received 3 shots. An interval of one week lapsed between each shot.
Cases of frost bite were rare among 149th Div personnel. Those few who did have frost bite however, were treated with application of a black colored salve.

13. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was wounded in the right thigh by small arms fire on 2 Feb 51 and captured shortly after by advancing troops of the US 65th RCT.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW observed many UN leaflets dropped approx 10 km north of SUWON during the latter part of Jan 51.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. No
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. PW reacted to the UN leaflets with thoughts that they might be telling the truth, but he did not think of attempting to surrender because he did not imagine that he would have any opportunity in the foreseeable future.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. No
