PW appeared in good physical condition. He was cooperative and talked freely.

32nd Regt suffered heavy casualties but received replacements after the 38th Div was deactivated.

4. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW heard from his Plat Ldr that the mission of the 32nd Regt was to capture ANDONG (DR7645) at any cost. PW also heard that his regt will support CCF units which will attack first. He did not see any CCF units. PW observed the CP of the 32nd Regt at TAEHWAR (DS5349) 25 Jan 51.

5. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted 18 Oct 50 at YONSANG NI (DS6314) into a guerrilla unit. On the same day, together with 6 conscripts, PW walked to YONGWOL (DS5324), arriving the same day. There he had a physical examination and on the following day walked to PYONGYANG (DS4635) arriving the same day. Here, he received 3 days of basic training with 300 conscripts.
23 Oct 50, PW walked with the 300 conscripts to WONJU (DS1534), arriving the following day. At WONJU, the 300 conscripts were integrated with 300 others and formed a unit designated as the “SPECIAL UNIT”. There was only one rifle in this unit, which each men fired in a 5 day period for familiarization.
O/a 30 Oct 50, PW departed with the “SPECIAL UNIT” northward, via mountain routes and passed through HAMHUNG (CU7817) and CHANGJIN (CU5171), and arrived at CHILPYONG (칠평) o/a 30 Nov 50.
At CHILPYONG the “Special Unit” was integrated with approx. 1,500 strugglers and designated the “#38 SPECIAL UNIT”.
O/a 8 Dec 50, PW departed with this unit south via mountain routes, arriving at CHUNCHON (CS8993) o/a 26 Dec 50. At CHUNCHON, the “#38 Special Unit” was redesigned the 38TH DIV and activated its 3 Regt (1st, 2nd, and 3rd). PW was assigned to the 3rd Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plat.
27 Dec 50 the 38th Div moved South and 3 days later it recuperated in small village.
31 1000 I Dec 50, because one soldier exposed himself in the open and was spotted by UN planes, the 38th Div was attacked with napalm and high explosive bombs. 38th Div suffered approximately 500 casualties in this raid.
That night it moved south again, arriving at HONGCH’ON (DS0372) on 4 Jan 51.

Here, the 38th Div was deactivated and its men were assigned to component units of the 27th Div. PW was assigned to the 32nd Regt, 2nd Bn, 4th Co, 1st Plat.
14 Jan 51 PW walked with the 32nd Regt to TAEHWANI (DS5349) arriving the following day.
20 Jan 51, PW deserted and started for his home in YONSANGNI (DS6314). 26 Jan 51, PW arrived in his home town, and was “greeted” by an American guard who took him prisoner.

6. PERSONALITIES:

7. REPLACEMENTS:
27th Div received approximately 1,500 replacements at HONGCH’ON 4 Jan 51 after the 38th Div was deactivated.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLY:
Food was obtained only through confiscation.
No ammo supply was received.

9. SIGNAL:
Bn and higher echelon units used telephones for communications, lower echelon used runners.

10. MORALE:
Morale was low because of insufficient amount of food and clothing.

11. MEDICAL:
Troops with frost bite or frozen feet were forced to keep up with the unit when it was on the march. If a man fell out of the column, he was beaten, and if he still did not walk, he was shot to death. PW saw two soldiers shot for not being able to walk.

12. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
