2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and spoke freely. Although he was a member of the 15th Div, 50th Regt, PW never saw any members of the 15th Div other than those from the 50th Regt. Information seems reliable.

 PW learned of the 50th Regt personnel strength from his company commander.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW was told by Company Commander 6 Jan 51 that 15th Div objective was to cut the route of withdrawal of the UN units heading toward PUSAN when the CCF starts its offensive.
During the night 9 Jan 51, the 50th Regt departed OSANGCHON MYON (DS4106) and marched South.
PW heard from his Company Commander 9 Jan 51 that the 50th Regt will follow the route travelled by the 10th Div.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW conscripted into NK “Volunteer” Unit 12 Sep 50 at ANSONG (CR4696).
PW and 100 others from ANSONG taken to SEOUL 15 Sep 50 and assigned to 10th Brig, 8th Bn. 10th Brigade composed of South Koreans who were conscripted by the NKA.
O/a 25 Sep 50, the 10th Brigade departed SEOUL on trucks and arrived at INJE (DT2813) Oct 50. 10th Brigade departed INJE and marched to SINGGYE (BT8564). Approx 250 men of 10th Brig reached SINGGYE as others were separated while avoiding air and ground observation.
15th Div, 50th Regt organized in the hills near SINGGYE with 250 men from the 10th Brig stragglers acquired during the period Oct 50 to o/a 2 Nov 50.
50th Regt departed SINGGYE area o/a 2 Nov 50 and travelled through mountainous terrain; crossing the 38th Parallel Dec 50 and marched further South through WONJU (DS0734) on 1 Jan 51 and arrived at OSANGCHON MYON 8 Jan 51.
PW deserted 9 Jan 51 at OSANGCHON MYON and was apprehended by a ROK unit at CHAJANG-NI 27 Jan 51 while returning home.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
All NKA stragglers encountered by the 50th Regt were given the choice of joining the unit or relinquishing their weapons to the unit and being sent back.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was procured locally. Food was generally insufficient. While marching, each man of the 50th Regt carried 3 days ration.
130 rd ammo was issued to each rifleman at a hill approx 12 km North of WONJU o/a 30 Dec 50.

8. SIGNAL:
One box (6’ x 12’ x 8’) was brought with the 50th Regt. This box was said to contain the only signal equipment of the 50th Regt.
Runners were used for comm within the 50th Regiment.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of the 50th Regt troops was very low because of the intense cold and lack of proper equipment.

10. MEDICAL:
9 Jan 51, many troops of the 50th Regt complained about severe stomach-aches.
Approx 50 men of the 50th Regt suffered from severe frozen feet. PW believes that the majority of the 50th Regt troops suffered from frozen feet.
Only mercurochrome was available for treatment of frozen feet.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

a. PW was apprehended while he was trying to return home after deserting his unit.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?

e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
