FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI -1463)　4 February 1951

PW appeared to be in good physical condition.

He was cooperative, although not in a position to have access to details about his unit and its activities.

Information, although quite limited, seems reliable.

8th Rifle Div: 3 Rifle Regt.

3rd Rifle Regt: 3 Rifle Bn.

3rd Rifle Bn: 3 Rifle Co.

9th Rifle Co: 4 Rifle Plat.

1st Plat: 3 Sqd.

Each Squad composed of 10 men.

5 Jan 51 the 8th NKA Div Hq was in a village approx 4 Km North of SUWON (CE 2528). 3rd Regt with the div hq.

Objective of the 8th Div was SUWON.

PW inducted into the 871st unit of the NKA 17 Aug 50 at P’YONGYANG (YD 3822). He received no training.

Departed from P’YONGYANG when the NKA retreated 21 Sep 50, marched over mountain trails, and arrived at CH’OSAN (YF 3624) on 20 Oct 50. There he was assigned to the 2nd Squad, 1st Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt of the 8th Division. He was issued a rifle, 800 rd of ammunition, and cotton-padded winter uniform at CH’OSAN 28 Nov 50.

PW departed from CH’OSAN 2 Dec 50 with 8th Div and arrived at SOPO (YD 3629) 13 Dec 50.

Departed SOPO 20 Dec 50 with 8th Div and arrived KAESONG (BT 8505) 29 Dec 50.

Departed KAESONG 6 Jan 51 with 8th Div and arrived SEOUL o/a 10 Jan 51.

Departed SEOUL 13 Jan 51 with 8th Div (crossing over the frozen HAN River), and arrived at a point approx 8 Km South of YONGDUNGP’O (CS 1654) 20 Jan 51. Departed this point 27 Jan 51 with the 8th Div, and arrived at CS 1036 during the night of 29 Jan 51. There PW Plat was assigned duty as sentries.

PW was captured during advance of the Turkish Brig at 301430 I Jan 51.

KWON, Sang Kyu (권상규), Jr Lt, Plat Ldr, 1st Plat, 9th Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 8th Division

8th Div received hundreds of replacements during the latter part of Dec 50 and first part of Jan 51. Replacements conscripted by the div as it passed through Korean towns and villages.

8th Div personnel subsisted on confiscating rice.

Personnel of the 8th Div were issued ammunition, Soviet rifles, and cotton-padded winter clothing while they were at CH’OSAN 28 Nov 50. The division has not been resupplied since.

PW believes the 8th Division has field telephones but no wireless sets.

8th Division morale is low due to poor battle effectiveness caused by 70% of the men being untrained recruits.

No disease in the 8th Division despite the fact that its personnel had not received immunizations.

Very few of the 8th Division men suffered from frost bite. No treatment received.
