1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative; PW suffering severe pain from shell fragments in right foot, gunshot wounds in left leg and frost bite on both feet. Pain limited extensive interrogation.
PW unable to recall details about his unit or its activities. Furthermore, he is practically illiterate.
PW insisted that the above designation of his division and regiment are correct.
Reliability of information seems doubtful.

Most of the casualties in the HMG Co were a result of constant attacks by UN aircraft. A few casualties from attack by US inf 30 Jan 51.

4. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted into 49th Regt of 149th Div during first part of Jan 50 in SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省). He received no training.
PW marched from SSUCHUAN SHENG with 49th Regt Jan 50, arriving HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) March 50.
PW departed HUPEI SHENG with 49th Regt Oct 50 by train, arriving T'IEN-CHING (天津) Oct 50.
PW departed T'IEN-CHING with 49th Regt Oct 50, by train, arriving P'INGKANG (平崗), MANCHURIA early Nov 50.
PW departed P'INGKANG late Nov 50 with 49th Regt, by train, crossed TUMEN River (date and place unk) in KOREA, and detrained early Dec 50. Upon detraining (place in KOREA unk), PW marched southward with 49th Regt through eastern mountains of KOREA (mountain trails generally used; automobile roads occassionally used), and arrived somewhere in the mountains of SOUTH KOREA o/a 29 Jan 51. On 30 Jan 51, PW regt attacked by US ground forces and PW was severely wounded. Last contact with his unit because he temporarily lost consciousness. Captured by US troops 310700 I Jan 51.

6. REPLACEMENTS:
49th Regt has received no replacements since it entered KOREA late Nov 50.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
49th Regt troops ate rice twice daily. Source of rations Korean villagers, who were given receipts for amount of rice confiscated. Villagers could turn these receipts in to the NORTH KOREAN government at a future date in partial payment of taxes.
49th Regt has received no ammunition since it was issued an unknown amount of weapons and ammunition in HUPEI SHENG during the summer of 1950.
49th Regt personnel issued cotton-padded winter uniforms in HUPEI SHENG Oct 50.

8. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of 49th Regt very high because most of the personnel were well trained, in good physical condition, and considered the regiment to be an efficient combat team.

9. MEDICAL:
PW noted no disease in 49th Regt. 49th Regt personnel received no immunization during PW tour of duty. (Jan 50 to 31 Jan 51).
Few instances of frost bite in 49th Regt. Frost bite treated with a black salve.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was severely wounded, lost consciousness temporarily, and was captured.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW observed UN leaflets dropped frequently by aircraft.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. PW does not remember what the leaflets said.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. The UN leaflets made PW think that he ought to surrender if he had an opportunity.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Several of the soldiers in PW platoon thought they ought to surrender and take a chance on receiving good treatment from UN forces; but old timers in the platoon persuaded them that the leaflets were merely a UN trick.
