2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appears sincere and talked freely. Information was limited because of his brief military service. Information seems reliable.

8th Co: 3 Rifle Plat, HMG Squad, and Sig Plat.

Personnel losses chiefly through desertion.
UN air strikes, ground combat, and exposure to the weather also caused losses.
No shortage of weapons. Arms and ammo picked up after each engagement. Arms and ammo supply increasing.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
Mission of 10th Div to cut supply routes behind UN lines. PW heard about a month ago that 10th Div will go to PUSAN.
280800 I Jan 51, 29th Regiment engaged by UN Force on hill approx 8 km South of ANDONG (DR 7646).
PW heard on 15 Jan 51 that 10th Div Hq and 27th Regiment were following 29th Regiment approx 16 km to rear of 29th Regt.
25th Regiment said to be rear of 10th Div Hq.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted into NKA at HWACHON (CT 8718) 18 Dec 50 and immediately assigned to 10th Div, 29th Regt.
10th Div departed HWACHON 19 Dec 50 and travelled south (crossing 38th parallel between HWACHON and YANGGU (DT 1117) 22 Dec 50) through mountain roads, passing through YONGWOL (DS 5314).
29th Regiment arrived on hill 8 km south of ANDONG (DR 7646) 280600 I Jan 51.
PW deserted as UN units attacked 29th Regiment position 280800 I Jan 51.
PW surrendered to ROK unit 290800 I Jan 51 approx 8 km South of ANDONG.

6. PERSONALITIES:

7. REPLACEMENT:
Captured ROK PW were asked if they wished to join the NKA and fight against UN Forces. There were approx 10 former ROK troops with the 29th Regt.

8. FOOD, AMMO, AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food locally procured. Troops of the 29th Regt often looted farm houses. Food generally insufficient.
No ammo supplied to 10th Div since arriving in SOUTH KOREA.
Special details were formed to pick up abandoned ammo. Ammo was generally sufficient.

9. SIGNAL:
Runners used for communication between bn and lower echelons.
Telephones used for communication between bn and regt.

10. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of recruits with 10th Division was very low because they did not want to fight. Morale of troops who saw action with 10th Division during Jul, Aug, and Sep 50 high because they believed that final victory will be won by NKA.
10th Div composed of 40% recruits and 60% veterans.

11. MEDICAL:
Approx 30% of 10th Div troops suffering from frozen feet. Mercurichrome and Korean heroists’ salve (KOYA) were applied.

12. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

PW voluntarily surrendered because he was told by villagers that he would be treated fairly if he surrendered.
