1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

DUTIES: Assistant Sqd Ldr.
EDUCATION: Primary School, 2 yrs.
AGE: 30
OCCUPATION: Railroad Police.
ADDRESS: NAN CHING HSI HAN HSI MEN TUTSU CHIEH (南京市 漢西門 堐子街)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 251700 I Jan 50 at CHONGCHONG-NI (approx 10 Km SW of SUWON)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative and gave information freely.
Information does not seem to be reliable on locations and dates due to PW travelling in a foreign country; other than that, the info seems fairly reliable.

148th Div: 442nd, 443rd & 444th Rifle Regt
442nd Regt: 3 Rifle Bn, 82mm Mortar Co, Sig Plat, Intendance Co, & Carbine Sqd.
2nd Bn: 3 Rifle Co, HMG Co.
5th Co: 3 Rifle Plat.
2nd Plat: 3 Rifle Sqd.
Each Rifle Sqd consisted of 12 men.

NOTE: Personnel losses were caused from casualties, desertions and sickness. The present weapons on hand seemed old but usable.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
After arriving CHONGCHONG RI (10 Km southwest of SUWON) 23 Jan 51, 5th Co, dug defensive positions on a hill along a road. The mission of the co was to secure this section of the road.
Other units of the 2nd Bn, in this vic; however, the locations and other activities of the units were not known.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
From Apr 46 to Dec 46, PW was a member of the Railroad Police at CHILIN HSI (吉林市)
In Jan 47 PW was conscripted into the CNA and CHANGCHUN (長春) and served with the 60th Army, 52nd Div, 3rd Bn, 9th Co, 2nd Plat, 6th Sqd (with a rank of Sgt) until 17 Aug 48.
17 Aug 48 60th Army (approx 30,000 troops) surrendered to CCF at CHANGCHUN. Immediately 60th Army was redesignated as the CCF 4th Field Army, 50th Army.
After receiving three months Infantry training at CHIU TAI HSIEN CHILIN SHENG (九台縣吉林省) PW was assigned to the 5th Sqd, 2nd Plat, 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 442nd Regt, 148th Div, 50th Army, 4th Field Army.
May 49 50th Army departed from CHIU TAI HSIEN (九台縣) by train and arrived at HONAN SHENLI (河南省) after five days on a train.
After remaining and HUNAN SHENG for two months, 50th Army marched for one month and arrived at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) where the 50th Army engaged CNA.
D/u Oct 50, 50th Army returned to CHILIN SHENG (吉林省) via railroad (3 days).
After resting for two weeks, 50th Army departed CHILIN SHENG for KOREA in the latter part of Oct 50.
50th Army arrived at ANTUNG (安東) after three days of marching.
Immediately, 148th Div crossed a wooden bridge beside the RR Bridge entering KOREA via SINUIJU (XE1839).
After entering KOREA PW travelled along with 2nd Bn to CHONG-CHONG RI from SINUIJU. PW did not remember dates and name places except PYONGYANG, SEOUL, and SUWON because of travelling only during nights.
During the above period, 2nd Bn assisted the 1st Bn, which fought against UN troops near the SEOUL RR Station.
Between SEOUL and CHONCHONG-NI, 2nd Bn was not engaged in any battle, while travelling south.
After arriving CHONCHON-NI (on 23 Jan 51) 5th Company dug defensive positions on a hill along the road.
25 Jan 51, the positions were attacked by UN troops.
During the engagement, the 5th Company was disorganized with 2 men dead and 2 men taken prisoner (PW and his Sqd Ldr) on 25 Jan 51.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food was very insufficient, therefore, the troops confiscated food from farmers and deserted farms as they advanced.
Since entering KOREA, the 1st Bn has never received ammo and food supplies from the rear.

8. SIGNAL:
Wireless and field telephones were used at the Regt’l Hq and above.
Runners were used between Co and Regt.
Whistles were used in PW co for air raid signals.
Bugles were used for movements, assembly, roll call, etc.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale was very low due to lack of sleeping, from long forced marches at nights, and inadequate food and clothing. However, they were well diciplined.

10. MEDICAL:
40% of co personnel were suffering from frosen and frost bitten feet and hands.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

a. PW did not surrender voluntarily; he was captured during an engagement.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?

a. Negative.

12. CCF ON TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
a. Marches:
Routes: Main roads.
Time of day or night: only at nights. Two files on the wide roads and one on the narrow roads were the formations used on the march. No fires were allowed; officers were very strict on smoking. Two sentries from each plat were used for security at halts.

b. Bivouacs: Depend on geographical features (under trees, farmers’ homes).
