2. ASSESSMENT:
PW seemed confused and unobservant. He gave conflicting answers many times. He insists his unit was the 50th Army, 166th Div, 498th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, although two other PW from his Co say that their unit is 50th Army, 150th Div.
Information seems unreliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
50th Army: 144th, 166th, and 150th Rifle Div.
166th Div: 498th, 499th, and 500th Rifle Regt.
498th Regt: 3 Rifle Bn.
1st Bn: 3 Rifle Co, Heavy Wpn Co, Sig Sqd.
1st Co: 3 Rifle Plat and Mortar Sqd.
2nd Plat: 2 Rifle Sqd and Wpn Sqd.
Code Names: 50th Army: WUCHIPU (武器部)
Div (all): TZUCHIANG PUTUI (■江部隊)

1st Bn, 498th Regt, 166th Div was never engaged in ground combat since coming to KOREA (as of 25 Jan 51). First engagement with UN Unit was at Hill 156 (CS3323) 26 Jan 51.
Personnel losses were through illness, desertion, and UN air strikes.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
26 Jan 51, two co 1st Bn, 498th Regt, 166th Div were in defensive positions on hill 156 (CS3323). They were ordered to defend this position at all cost. A UN unit attacked this position and the 2 co retreated.
The 166th Div was primarily concerned with trying to avoid UN air strikes.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted into the CNA during Jan 48 at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) and was assigned to 2nd Army, 164th Div.
PW was captured by CCF 50th Army at SSUCHUAN SHENG (四川省) on 5 Dec 49 and was assigned to CCF 50th Army, 166th Div, 499th Regt.
PW was indoctrinated on Communist ideology until Aug 50 at SSUCHUAN SHENG.
Aug 50, 50th Army departed SSUCHUAN SHENG and arrived at ANTUNG (安東). At ANTUNG during Sep 50, 50th Army was reorganized. After reorganization PW was assigned to 498th Regt, 166th Div, 50th Army.
5 Nov 50, 50th Army crossed the YALU River from ANTUNG into SINUIJU (XE 1839).
498th Regt remained in SINUIJU until 8 Dec 50 undergoing training.
8 Dec 50, 498th Regt departed SINUIJU and marched south through NAMSI DUNG (南市洞), P`YONGYANG (stayed 3 days in P`YONGYANG) and SEOUL (stayed 10 days in SEOUL, d/u) to Hill 156 (CS3323) arriving o/a 23 Jan 51.
PW was captured 26 Jan 51 at Hill 156 (CS3323) by attacking Turkish Troops when he was late withdrawing from his position.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LI, Tsu Shen (李樹森), Ass’t Plat Ldr, 2nd Plat, 1st Co, 1st Bn, 498th Regt.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was procured locally from villagers. While marching, approx 1 kg of rice (4 days ration) was carried by every man.
The 166th Div was never supplied with ammo since coming to Korea. Ammo was last issued at ANTUNG o/a 5 Nov 50.

8. SIGNAL:
In PW Co the fol signals were used:
Clapping hands three times: Enemy approaching
Clapping hands once: Friendly troops approaching
Blowing whistle three times: Aircraft approaching
Blowing whistle once (long blast): All clear (air)
Communication between co and bn was by bugle.

9. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Morale of the 498th Regt was very low because the troops did not want to fight. Long night marches and constant UN air strikes also were contributing factors to the low morale.

10. MEDICAL:
During June 50, PW was inoculated 3 times at SSUCHUAN (四川) against smallpox, cholera and dysentry.
Approx 33% of the troops with the 498th Regt were suffering from frozen feet. A yellow oil-like liquid was applied to frozen feet.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?

12. TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
a. Marches:
Route of march was over mountain trails. Unit marched from sunset to sunrise. While On difficult trails, approx 7 post halts were made at night.
3 scouts usually preceeded the main body.

b. Bivouacs:
There were not any set bivouac areas. When available, houses were occupied. Each plat posted 3 sentries during bivouac; 2 were stationary, and 1 was a roving sentry. When there is snow on the ground, white cloth was placed over the head to avoid detection from air.

c. Defense:
PW only knowledge of defense against air attack is to be flat on the ground.
