ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3279　10 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (164 - MISDI - 1436)　29 January 1951

PW can not write, nor can he count figures. PW was very unobservant.

He was not familiar with the military.

Info seems unreliable.

2nd Plat was dispatched to a hill 22 Jan 51 so the Co could have a rest.

2nd Co was 5 Km back of the Plat and the 1st Bn was 8 Km back of the 2nd Co.

Conscripted into the SSUCHUAN (四川) Provincial Guard in Oct 49 at SSUCHUAN. Received no training.

13 guards were captured by a CCF unit at SSUCHUAN in May 50.

PW was placed into the 4th Sqd, 2nd Plat, 2nd Co, 1st Bn, Unk Regt, Unk Div, 50th Army in June 50 at HUPEI, ICHANG (湖北省 宜昌).

Received no training.

1st Bn left ICHANG by foot Jul 50 and arrived at CHINMEN (金門) Jul 50. Received no training.

1st Bn left CHINMEN by foot Oct 50 and arrived at HONAN (河南) Nov 50. Soldiers were issued weapons and ammo at HONAN. Received no training.

1st Bn left HONAN by train Nov 50 and after 7 to 8 days of travelling, arrived in KOREA Dec 50.

PW did not know when and where he crossed into KOREA because he rode in a closed-car.

1st Bn left the station in Dec 50 by foot and marched over main roads at night without encountering any large towns, and arrived at the area of capture, o/a 15 Jan 51.

Captured by 35th RCT on 25 Jan 51.

Ammo and weapons were last received at HONAN in Nov 50.

Food was confiscated from whatever village they entered.

PW claims that he had one set of winter uniform and no civilian clothes.

Co used runners.

Morale was low because they were forced into the Army, and food supply was low.

Soldiers in PW company had chest and stomach complications, and frostbitten feet. The ill were forced to walk.

a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?

a. PW voluntarily surrendered to US Troops because he was disgusted with the Army.

b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?

a. PW saw UN leaflets on Jan 51. He had not heard any UN loudspeaker broadcasts.

c. Can you describe what they said?

a. He learned through others, who could read, that the leaflets stated: “Why are you fighting this hopeless war? Communist countries are lacking in food and clothing.”

d. What was your reaction to them?

a. PW believed that the leaflets were telling the truth. This was one of the reasons he surrendered.

e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?

a. Negative

When it starts to get dark, the Bn marches in a single file without any scouts or advance party. There were no regular periods of rests; discretion was left to the Bn CO. Marches ceased at day break.

When the column was attacked by planes during the night, the men continued marching.

They always looked for a village will houses to sleep. PW believed that sentries were posted, but he did not know where and how many.

When airplanes attacked the bivouac area, they stayed in the houses, or when they were outside, they would sit down until the attack was completed.

PW believed that when attacking, they would go in a single file, as in marching. He came to this conclusion because they were always walking in single file.

25 Jan 51 at the place of capture, the defense was constructed by digging a trench in a semi-circle, 2½ ft wide x 3 ft, midway on the side of a hill. At the both ends of the arch, LMG were placed.

PW did not know any military tactics and techniques because he did not receive any training. He did not know how to fire a weapon. In the Army he only marched and performed menial duties.
