FIELD REPORT (163 - MISDI - 0237) 30 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: KIM, Song Uk (金成郁)
PW NO: 1st M-P-4465
RANK: Pvt
DUTIES: Ammo Carrier
UNIT: 10th Div, 25th Regt, Ind Bn, Ammo Plat, Ammo Sqd
PLACE OF CAPTURE: ODUSAN - TA 03150
DATE OF CAPTURE: 27 Jan 51
INTERROGATOR: MATSUSHITA

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW and 5 other men of the same sqd were ordered to watch the main road at TA 03150 which was leading toward TAEGU. When they reached the road, the sqd divided evenly on each side of the road. O/a 270800 Jan, approx 600 US Marines came up the road. The 6 men fired on the Marines. Because their Sqd Ldr was killed, his Plat Ldr ordered all men to withdraw. The PW refused to withdraw because he was sick of fighting and willingly surrendered.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Strength of Unit:
(1) Original Strength:
The PW estimated the 10th NK Div to consist of the following:
On or at 29 Dec 50 at YANGGU.
10th Div - 9,000 men (Approx)
Regt - 3,000 men (Approx)
Bn - 1,000 men (Approx)
Co - 200 men (Approx)
Three Regt to a Div. Composition unk.
(2) Present Strength:
10th NK Div - 6,000 men (Approx)
Regt - 2,000 men (〃)
Approx 3,000 men either deserted, KIA or MIA while en route from YANGGU to ODUSAN.

b. Chronology:
28 Dec 50 - PW conscripted into the NKA at YANGGU, NORTH KOREA.
29 Dec 50 - 10th Div left YANGGU (strength: Approx 9,000 men) for the south. Told by his Plat Ldr, that the CCF was to follow the 10th Div.
O/A 22 Jan 50 - The Sqd and Plat Ldr chased all civilians out of a village and took shelter in this village from morning until night. Unk if it was a Div or Regt strength that took shelter in this village; however, PW believes it was larger than a Bn. PW received M-1 Rifle and 200 rd of ammunition from Plat Ldr. PW never fired a round until time of capture.
27 Jan 50 - PW was captured because he wanted to surrender and refused to heed his Plat Ldr command for withdrawal.

c. Weapons and Equipment:
Bn had the fol weapon:
Sqd Ldr - Carbines (US)
Plat Ldr - Pistols & PPSH SMG
4 HMG
4 LMG
All EM had Russian rifles.
50 rounds of rifle ammunition issued to each EM. Hand grenades were issued. No arty nor mort seen.

d. Status of Supply:
Ammo - Limited to what they already had. No resupply.
Food - Food procured from villagers. Ate twice a day, sometimes only once a day.
Medical - There were medical personnel attached to PW unit; however, the type of medicine unknown.
Clothing - The clothes they wore. US uniforms were issued to some personnel.
Shelter - Shelter was taken in villages.

e. Other Units:
29 Dec 50 and o/a 15 Jan 51, PW heard that the CCF were to follow in the rear of the 10th Div. 29 Dec 50 this was heard from his Plat Ldr and on 15 Jan 51, PW heard it from his Sqd Ldr.

f. Morale:
One-third of the Ind Bn morale was very good. All other person of the Ind Bn were recent conscripts and were opposed to Communism.

g. Effective Weapons:
The air strikes and artillery were the most effective weapon used against them. Napalm bombs were the most feared.
