ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3270 9 February 1951
FIELD REPORT (521-MISDI-0380) 28 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHAN Sun Yon (張淳令)
RANK: Draftee (rejected)
INTERROGATED BY: Cpl IMAGAWA

2. CIRCUMSTANCE OF CAPTURE:
PW was captured 24 Jan 51 at CHOSUCHAE by elements of the NK with 9 others enroute home from KINMEI where he received physical examination.
The enemy capturing unit indicated that they were a guerrilla unit. After capture, prisoners were forced to accompany their captors to TOKCH’ON. That night, the prisoners were asked by an officer whether they served in the ROKA or local security police force. After interrogation prisoners were allowed to sleep, then around midnight the 9 prisoners escaped when the guard fell asleep. Only source was recaptured after he ran about 1 km toward TANGYANG. He was brought back to TOKCHON but he escaped during confusion of fire and headed toward east. This time source was captured by UN Force in vicinity of TSUNAN-KOLU.
Some of these troops were billeted in civilian houses that escaped from bombing, however, majority were hiding in old abandoned mine shafts in a mountain on west side of TOKCH’ON. Source heard that these guerrillas were from PYONGAN-DO area and scheduled to leave TOKCH’ON after about 10 days, however, their destination was unk. This guerrilla unit was called a battalion and said to have a strength of 1,000 men, however, source actually observed about 400 men.
They were equipped only with small arms such as PPsh SMG, American carbines, Russian rifles and ammo was in-short supply. Source believes that officers were wearing American uniforms (fatigues) and some were wearing ROK security police uniforms but majority was wearing plain white civilian clothes.
