FIELD REPORT (IX COPRS MISD - 0236) 30 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative during interrogation and the information obtained is considered fairly reliable. He tried his utmost in answering all questions asked of him. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
PW conscripted into the NAMHAE Unit at KUMSAN (BQ9483) Aug 50. Soon thereafter the whole unit retreated to KARYOJU via TAEJON, CHOCHIWON and arrived there o/a the end of Dec. Here all stragglers coming in from S KOREA were collected and regrouped by the NKA II Corps which maintained regrouping and training centers at KARYOJU-RI. While at KARYOJU-RI for a week he observed approx 20,000 stragglers.
Under supervision of the II NKA Corps, 1st Brig was organized for the purpose of engaging in guerrilla warfare in South KOREA. 1st Brig CO is LEE Hyon San (李亨山) whose domicile was at KUMSAN CQ6496. LEE conducted active Guerrilla led Communist uprisings in South KOREA prior to the Korean Incident. His headquarters was at CHIRI-SAN CQ8208. O/a 13 Dec 50, the 1st Brig departed KARYOJU-RI and headed S engaging the police of WOLCHONG NI (located 6 Km N of CHORWON) for an hour without casualties. From here the 1st Brig proceeded S passing through INJE-MYON, SOBAEK-SAN, and arrived at YONGPUNG on DR1072 290500 Jan 51. Upon arrival there they were fired upon by the YONGPUNG-NI Youth Group at which time PW hid in a latrine. 291700 Jan 51, he came out and surrendered, at the same time turned in his M-1 rifle to the Youth Group.

b. Organization and Strength
1st Brig had approx 1,000 men. The Brig is subdivided as follows:

1st Brig is a guerrilla unit organized and designated to confuse the enemy as to its actual strength. PW 508th Regt was made up of the 8th and 9th Sector Units. Each Sector Unit consists of 2 Plat. Each Plat has 3 Sqd of 6 to 8 men each. Regt of guerrilla unit are equivalent to a Regular Army Bn.

c. Other Units
O/a 15 Jan 51, the 1st Brig established contact with the NKA 10th Div, 20 Km S of TANYANG. This Div was to work together with the 1st Brig in conducting guerrilla warfare in the CHIRI-SAN area.
When the 1st Brig was organized at KARYOJU-RI, there was also a special political organization. The men in this unit were former political officers who were in South KOREA prior to the North Korean retreat. He believes many of these men, 20 to 40 years of age, came S posing as refugees.

d. Weapons
The 1st Brig has four 82mm mortars without ammunition, six 60mm mortars with 2 or 3 rds of ammunition. Each Regt has 1 HMG with 1 or 2 cases of ammo. Each Sector Unit has 1 Russian LMG with one 42 rd drum of ammo. All the men were armed with either PPSH SMG, M1-Rifles, carbines or Russian rifles. Men with PPSH SMG had one drum of ammo, while those with M-1 Rifles, carbines, and Russian Rifles had 60 to 70 rd each. Each man also had 1 or 2 handgrenades. Arms and ammo were picked up from either abandoned weapons or dead enemy soldiers.

e. Mission
1st Brig was organized to conduct guerrilla warfare. His officers were heard saying that they were to operate in the CHIRI-SAN area and harass the UN supply lines.

f. Personalities
LEE Hyon Sun (李鉉祖), age 45, known only as Corps Commander.
Ko Kyon Suk (高鎬鉉), age 27, CO 505th Regt.
KWAN Il (觀日), age 26, CO 506th Regt.
HUNG Pok (光福), age 26, CO 507th Regt.
CHUN Ki (正基), age 26, CO 508th Regt.

g. Propaganda
Mission of the political group with the guerrilla unit was to erect posters for the enforcement of military discipline and to cause disturbance among the villagers.
Former ROK soldiers were in the guerrilla unit who had been captured and indoctrinated. However, almost all of them escaped after being with the guerrillas for a short time.

h. Identification Among Guerrilla Unit
Method No. 1
When a group is doubtful of another as to identification it fires two shots in rapid succession, followed, after a pause, by another shot. In reply, shots must be fired in reversal. One shot, a pause, then two shots in rapid succession.
Method No. 2
A white cloth is waved in a circular motion. In reply, the same colored cloth is waved to indicate a cross.
Method No. 3
If dispersed in combat, the guerrillas went to the hill where they had gathered the previous day.
All three methods used for recognition ware universally used by all guerrilla outfits according to PW.
