ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO 3250　8 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (24 Div - LDI - 0173)　3 February 1951

PW deserted his unit on or about 030400 Jan 51 and voluntarily surrendered to elements of 5th RCT. PW in good physical condition. PW was cooperative and of average intelligence. Information considered fairly reliable. Held rank of Sgt in the Chinese Nationalist Army. PW was engaged in farming prior to entering service.

PW was inducted into the Chinese Nationalist Army at CHINTOW on Mar 46. Captured by elements of CCF at KWANDUNG and received 1 month of Communist indoctrination. Upon completion assigned to the 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co. Crossed into North KOREA via MANPOJIN in late Oct 50. Crossed the 38th parallel approx 1 month ago. No knowledge on route taken after crossing 38th parallel. PW stated that the 1st Bn arrived vic Hill 175 CS 550343 approx 15 days ago. 1st Bn CP was located vic Hill 175 on or about 030400 Jan 51. 334th Regt was deployed along Hill 175. The 334th Regt CP located N of Hill 175. Location unknown. 335th and 336th Regts located on right (W) and to the rear of 1st Bn CP. Strength unknown. Approx 4 days ago heard from political leader that the 334th Regt shall defend Hill 175 at all cost. 2nd and 3rd Bn in reserve to the rear.

38th Army composed of 112th, 113th and 114th Divisions. Heard that Ind Arty Bn (number unk) attached to the 38th Army. 112th Div composed of 334th, 335th and 336th Regt. 3 Bn in each regiment. Each Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co and 1 Hvy Weapons Co. Signal, Supply and Medical Plats attached to each regiment. No tank units attached to 38th Army.

Weapons:

All other personnel armed with U.S. M-1 Rifles, U.S. M-3 SMG, carbines, U.S. BAR and Jap rifles.

Food locally procured. No knowledge of food and ammo supply point. No ammo issued after crossing. S/A ammo picked up enroute which were left behind by UN Forces.

Approx 1 month ago heard from political leader that the 38th Army was being reinforced by 42nd and 43rd Armies.

Approx 5 days ago heard from plitical leader that in the near future approx 200,000 CCF troops will reinforce military strength in KOREA.

e. Intentions: Present mission is to fight a defensive war and hold present positions at all cost. If defeated, withdraw across HAN River, regroup and set up new defensive position. Plan to start Spring offensive (date u/k).

Approx 10 percent of troops suffering from bad colds. Approx 25 percent of troops suffering from frost bitten feet. Approx 50 percent of troops have no desire to fight. Troops demoralized by constant air strikes and arty bombardment. Also lack of food and warm clothing.

CCF troops held their fire until the enemy advanced 20 - 30 meters from their position. Then opened fire with MG and Automatic weapons.

During approaches to enemy positions at night, narrow paths on slope of mountains and main roads are generally used.

All movements made during 1900 to 0300 hours. Hid in fox holes during daylight hours.

Although white phosphorous fire is most feared, casualties are the same as HE arty fires.

Hid in fox holes camouflaged with branches to escape arty fire.
