1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW is illiterate. He was a horse tender all through his CCF career and states that he does not know anything of his unit or other information because of his duty.
The information is considered to be unreliable.

167th Div engaged 26 Jan 51 during which time unit suffered a few casualties. Div scattered vic Hill 156 (CS3323) 26 Jan 51.

4. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted into CNA 25 Aug 48 at NANYANG HSIEN (南陽懸). O/a 15 Aug 49, captured by CCF and HUFEI (湖北), and for about 4 months stayed in this area receiving no military training or communist indoctrination.
O/a 15 Dec 49, PW assigned to 167th Div, 499th Regt, 1st Bn, HMG Co and on the same day marched with the entire 167th Div with packs and rifle (average 14 miles per day).
O/a 15 Sep 50, PW departed by rail with 167th Div, arriving LIAO TUNG SHENG (遼東省) 9 Oct 50, detrained here, rested about 4 days, and then left by rail for ANTUNG (安東), arriving the fol day.
O/a 20 Nov 50, the 167th Div marched across the Korean border, passing through SINUIJU (KE1839) the fol day and then marched S via mountain trails arriving in the vic of HILL 156 (CS3323) 20 Jan 51.
26 Jan 51 the 167th Div was attacked by the Turkish Brigade and after a few hours, the 167th Div was routed. After this engagement, PW was captured on Hill 156.

5. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food obtained only through confiscation. PW heard from other soldiers that his unit, the HMG Co, 1st Bn, 499th Regt, received some ammo supply, but, where and when it was brought in, were unknown.

6. MORALE AND BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
Moral of the troops low due to insufficient amount of food and clothing. Troops fear most the constant UN air attacks. Because of its effectiveness, the soldiers lost all confidence in their victory and now have no desire to fight.

7. MEDICAL:
167th Div personnel were vaccinated the day before they crossed the border, o/a 20 Nov 50.

8. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:

b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes, the area was unknown.

a. He cannot read.

a. Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Negative.

9. TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES:
167th Div marched over mountain trails at night in single file with no security because it marched through secured territories.
During the day, the troops dug themselves foxholes in the mountains and covered themselves with straw mats.
