4. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW unit, upon conscription (Oct 50) in SHANTUNG SHENG, was under 70th Army and he still considers himself as belonging to the 70th Army.
PW conscripted Oct 50 in SHANSUNG SHENG after 5 days he went by train from CHI NAN to SUGHIA TENG (about 10 km South of MUKDEN where RR branches; one branch to ANDUNG, the other to DAIREN). PW marched to ANTUNG (although there was a RR connecting these points. This march was made for training purposes) with approximately a Bn of other recruits (believed to be 500 men). PW received no training other than this march. PW claims he learned to operate the rifle by asking fellow recruits during the march.
Arrived ANTUNG sometime early Nov. Stayed about 10 days and received ammo and weapons.
Crossed YALU River over a bridge at ANTUNG at night. Marched S. PW does not know names of Korean towns or cities he passed thru until his unit reached SEOUL. PW unit passed thru SEOUL at night o/a 5 Jan 51 and reached point of capture (unk days march S of SEOUL) where his unit stayed 2 days.
His Bn was expecting an attack and prepared for battle.
These preparations included sending out reconnaissance patrols and digging foxholes. The patrols were composed of 30 to 40 men and were sent out at night. They were dressed in civilian clothes to determine enemy strength in front of PW unit. They were to report their findings, and not to fight.
PW unit never joined other groups. His Bn was formed in SUCHIAT'UNG and stayed together all the way until conflict.
PW says his unit passed no other units except one group of about 400 North Peoples Army at unk location.
Marched over trails, avoiding towns.

In bivouac one man from each Plat stand guard around area. When UN aircraft approached, Sentry gave alarm and all men scattered out in hills and lay still. Slept usually in Farmers houses and small villages. Would leave good sized villages for fear of bombing when UN aircraft approached.
