2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative. PW appeared to be in good physical condition. He talked freely and promptly answered questions asked him. Although information is somewhat limited because PW had little opportunity to learn details about his units’ activities it seems to be reliable.

18th Rifle Regt: 3 Rifle Bn. Recon Plat, Communications Co. Medical Plat, and other unidentified units.

3rd Plat, 5th Rifle Co: 3 Rifle Sqd. Each sqd has 7 men.

4. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW was inducted into the NKA on 10 Aug 50 at MUAN (DQ7991).
There he received one week training in close order drill and military courtesy.
PW departed from MUAN o/a 25 Aug 50 with approx 200 other conscripts, marched via the following route:

At SEOUL, PW received one week of basic infantry training.
PW departed from SEOUL during Sep 50, marched with the 200 conscripts who had joined the NKA at the same time as PW, and arrived in the vicinity of KANGDONG (BU4837) on 5 Oct 50. There they joined approx 100 NKA regular troops.
PW departed from the KANGDONG vicinity o/a 20 Oct 50, marched with 300 other NKA soldiers (traveling at night only), and arrived at MANPOJIN(淸浦鎭) o/a 1 Dec 50. There this group of 300 NKA soldiers were designated “Independent Bn.” They performed no duties but merely awaited further orders.
PW departed from MANPOJON o/a 10 Dec 50 with the “Independent Rn,” marched (at night only), and arrived at PYONGYANG o/a 15 Dec 50. At PYONGYANG, the entire “Independent Bn,” were incorporated into units of the 18 Independent NKA Regt.
PW departed from PYONGYANG o/a 15 Dec 50 with the 18th Independent Regt, marched (at night only), and arrived SEOUL 5 Jan 51.
6 Jan 51, the CO of the 18th Independent Regt, told his men that his regiment would go back to North Korea to be integrated as a unit into the 4th NKA Division which was at SUAN (BT7186).
PW departed from SEOUL the night of 7 Jan 51 with the 18th Regiment, marched northward approx 4 Km and deserted by dropping out of the marching column with the excuse that his feet hurt too much to keep up with his unit. He then returned to SEOUL that night.
PW departed from SEOUL 9 Jan 51, walked across the frozen HAN River, continued walking and arrived at SUWON (CS2428) 21 Jan 51. There, a resident sympathized with his desire to keep away from the NKA. This resident gave him civilian clothing, food and shelter for one night.
22 Jan 51, PW buried his rifle, departed from SUWON, walked and arrived at SOJONG NI at 240800 Ⅰ Jan 51, whereupon he was immediately apprehended by soldiers of the US 35th RCT who were occupying the town.

5. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
7 Jan 51, the 18th NKA Regt, was marching north from SEOUL to join the 4th NKA Division at SUAN (BT7105).

6. PERSONALITIES:
PAK, San Su (박상수), Lt Col, CO, 2nd Bn, 18th Regt.
KIM, Chong Luk (김청루), Capt (4 small stars), CO, 5th Co, 2nd Bn, 18th Regt.
KANG, Chong Su(강청수), Jr. Lt., Plat Ldr, 3rd Plat, 5th Co, 2nd Bn.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
The 10th Regiment received 300 replacements at P’YONGYANG o/a 15 Dec 50. These replacements came from MANPOJIN.

8. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
18th Regiment personnel received rations by confiscating food from towns and villages.
300 replacements for the 18th Regiment brought 300 M1891/30 rifles and 15,000 rds of ammo with them from MANPOJIN when they joined the regiment, o/a 15 Dec 50. These men were issued winter cotton padded uniforms immediately prior to their departure from MANPOJIN o/a 10 Dec 50.

9. SIGNAL:
The 18th Regiment has no radios but has an unknown number of field telephones.

10. MORALE & BATTLE EFFECTIVENESS:
The morale of the 18th Regiment is fairly high and most of the men are in good physical condition. Combat efficiency is low however, because the regiment is badly under strength.

11. MEDICAL:
PW has noted no disease in the 18th regiment despite the fact that the men have received no immunizations.
Approx 20% of the 18th Regiment personnel suffer from some stage of frost bite. All are able to walk nevertheless.

12. CCF INFORMATION:
Observed thousands of CCF riflemen and automatic weapons soldiers in SEOUL 7 Jan 51. No other information on CCF.

13. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily?
PW did not surrender voluntarily. He was captured.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
No.
c. Can you describe what they said?
No.
d. what was your reaction to them?
Negative.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
No.
