PW was cooperative, sincere and of average intelligence. Information seems reliable.

II Corps: 10th, 24th, 14th and other unknown Divs.

10th Div: 25th, 27th and the 29th Inf Regts, Engr Bn, Sig Co and Med Unit.

27th Regt: 3 Rifle Bns

27th and 29th Regts suffered approx 500 casualties 12 Jan 51. Their former combined strength numbered approx 2,000

27th Regt Hqs was located in KAMCHON MYON (DR6059) with 29th Regt Hqs. (last seen, 16 Jan 51).

27th and 29th Regts on 14 Jan 51 engaged a ROK unit in YONGDONG (approx 16 km W of KAMCHON MYON). Approx 500 casualties suffered by both Regts from aerial attacks and ground fighting. Both Regts, leaving their wounded behind, retreated to KWACHON MYON, SUHAN NI.

10th Div Hqs located approx 16 km to the rear.

25th Regt last seen proceeding south alone three days after the 39th parallel was crossed.

10th Div’s objective was ANDONG (DR6368), where they were supposed to engage in guerrilla warfare and to disrupt UN communication lines.

The entire II Corps objective was said to be ANDONG.

Conscripted 16 May 49 at PYONGYANG. Received 1 month training.

Assigned to a Railroad Guard Regt in PYONGYANG on 14 Jul 49. Left PYONGYANG by truck and train in Jul 50 arriving at SEOUL (date unknown). Passed through SUWON arriving at CHONJU (CR6755) Sep 50.

Remained in CHONJU for 15 days before leaving for TAEJON, where Regt was supposed to be committed.

Remained in TAEJON for one day, before retreating N.

PW and 7 others traveled through the TAEBAK and ODAE mountains arriving at HWACHON (CT8619), date unknown, where they were assigned to the 10th Div.

10th Div had security duties from HWACHON to YUCHON (approx 12 km E of HWACHON).

10th Div left HWACHON 26 Dec 50 crossing the 38th parallel the same day.

Three days later, 25th Regt separated from the 10th Div, proceeded S alone. 27th and 29th Regts marched together, utilizing mountain trails, and traveling during the night, marching a average of 14 km per night.

During the day, they slept in villages or in the mountains under the trees. 37th and 29th Regts arrived at YONDONG, 132200 I Jan 51. 140800 I Jan 51, both Regts engaged a ROK unit and retreated to KWACHON MYON, SUHAN NI on 142100 I Jan 51.

PW and one other deserted 16 Jan 51, taking with them 1 SMG, 1 rifle and 1 telephone. They surrendered to the civilian police of KWACHON MYON on 160400 I Jan 51.

Food was procured locally in sufficient amounts. Two or three meals were received daily.

Enroute, the troops carried 5 days supply of uncooked rice each. Arriving at KAMCHON, most of the supplies were exhausted. They are believed to have been replenished at SUHAN NI.

No ammo supplies were slated to arrive to the 10th Div. PW stated the only source of supply was by capturing them or picking up abandoned supplies.

Approx 80% of the troops can be persuaded to surrender, but they were afraid of the consequences of being captured. All of them were under the impression of being tortured and killed if captured. They were heard to say they would rather die on the battlefield than be tortured after capture.

An undetermined number of soldiers suffering from frozen feet or severe cases of frost bite were seen being left in farm houses as the unit advanced.

PW’s unit was engaged in establishing communications between the Regt Hqs and the 3 Bns. No telephone communication was set up between the Bns.

An average of 6 km of telephone wire was usually used in setting up communications within the Regt.

a. Did you surrender voluntarily?

Yes. PW was disgusted with the hardship suffered and had been contemplating surrender for a long time. Being afraid of mistreatment by being captured, PW was reluctant in surrendering. He came to a point where he did not care whether he lived or died, and had contempt for the NKA, PW took his chances in surrendering.

b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?

Negative.

c. Can you describe what they said?

Negative.

d. What was your reaction to them?

Negative.

e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
