Conscripted into 1st Sqd, 1st Plat, 1st Co, 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 31st Div, II Corps 3 Sep 50 at KANGGYE (BA 9837).
Received no training.
31st Div reorganized 4 Sep 50 to 3 Nov 50 at MANP’OJIN (BA 7259).
31st Div activated at SEOUL from South Korean personnel (the so-called “Volunteers”). Men were from KOYNGSAN PUKTO, KYONGSAN NAMDO and KYONGGI DO. As of 3 Nov 50, 90% of personnel were South Korean. Few were former 15th Div, 3rd Div and 4th Div personnel; others were North Korean recruits. Travelled from MANP’OJIN to YONGWOL, over the following route:

PW was scrounging for food, when captured by ROK troops.

5. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
18 Jan 51, 1st Co was on a hill 800 m W of YONGWOL. 2nd Co was 1km W of YONGWOL; 3rd Bn 500 m E of YONGWOL.
17 Jan 51, II Corps and 31st Div CP’s located at WONGOL. PW heard that 31st Div was to move to YONGWOL because of ROK’s pressure. Movement of Corps and Regt CP’s unknown.
At MANP’OJIN, 3 Nov 50, PW heard rumors that 31st Div’s objective was PUSAN (EP 0183). O/a 1 Jan 51 at CHECH’ON, PW heard from fellow soldiers, 31st Div and 2nd Div are to take ANDONG (DR 6545) by avoiding battle with UN Forces having superior strength.
Officers in his unit constantly told the men, II and V Corps were to engage guerrilla warfare behind the UN Forces and disrupt supply lines.
Mission of II and V Corps was to travel through Central KOREA as guerrilla units, they were to be followed by NKA and CCF troops, and CCF troops were to attack down both coasts.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
3 Sep 50 at KANGGYE, 70 conscripts were received by 31st Div.

8. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
3 Nov 50 at MANPOJIN, 70 rounds of ammo issued along with 15 Kg of rice.
In North KOREA once, troops received food from Village People’s Committees. In South KOREA, food was foraged from farm villages.

9. MORALE:
Morale was low because of UN aircraft strafing and the lack of NKA tanks and arty.

10. US PsW:
PW saw 40 ROK PsW at YANGGU o/a 13 Dec 50. PW heard from fellow soldiers, these men had a choice of joining the NKA or returning to their units. PW states PsW returned to their units.
During the early part of the war, PW heard that South Korean PsW were killed, at present, NKA troops are not allowed to commit such atrocities.

12. CCF INFO:
PW did not see any CCF Units but heard 3 Nov 50 at MANP’OJIN that the 4th Field Army was to come to aid the NKA.

a. PW voluntarily surrendered to ROK troops because he did not want to fight Koreans.
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets, or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. PW did not see any UN leaflets or hear any broadcasts.
