2. ASSESSMENT:
PW seemed sincere and talked freely but contradicted himself repeatedly on questions concerning unit designations.
Info seems unreliable concerning unit designations but otherwise seems fairly reliable.

4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
14th Regt, 27th Div engaged the ROK 3rd Regt at SONG KWANG GOL (성광골) 15 Jan 51 for two hours. 161200 Jan 51 the 14th Regt was in a defensive position approx 2 Km N of SONG KWAN GOL.
The III Corps Hq was located approx 10 Km N of SONG KWANG GOL 16 Jan 51.
14th Regt provided security for II Corps Hq. 14th Regt had been separated from the 27th Div and the V Corps when PW joined the Regt 10 Nov 50, and was trying to locate them when it met the II Corps at ICHON (CT2762) 20 Nov 50. II Corps CG promised the 14th Regt CO that he would located the 27th Div for him if 14th Regt accompanied the II Corps Hq to TANYANG (DS4402).
II Corps was scheduled to reach TANYANG 27 Jan 51.
PW heard from the 14th Regt CO frequently that the NK VI and VIII Corps were undergoing training in MANCHURIA.
The mission of the II Corps was to cut UN supply routes and to attack small UN units.

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
PW inducted 9 Sep 49 at WONSAN (CU6545) and was assigned to the 945th Marine Regt in WONSAN. PW trained with the 1st Bn, 945th Marine Regt at CHOBO RI (DT5159) until 25 Jun 50.
1st and 2nd Bns, 945th Marine Regt landed at CHONGDONG JIN-NI (ES0471) 260600 Jun 50 from approx 30 boats.
27 Jun 50, the 1st and 2nd Bns, 945th Marine Regt departed CHONGDONG and marched to ULCHIN (ER36934), arriving 30 Jun 50.
1st and 2nd Bns, 945th Marine Regt departed ULCHIN 30 Jun 50 and marched to KANGNUNG (DS9177), arriving 2 Jul 50.
From 2 Jul 50 to 18 Jul 50, the 1st and 2nd Bns, 945th Marine, joined by the 3rd Bn from WONSAN, guarded the beaches from KANGNUNG to ULCHIN.
18 Jul 50, 945th Marine Regt redesignated the WONSAN Marine Brig (Code No 945) with the addition of ROK volunteers. From Jul 50 to 15 Sep 50, the WONSAN Marine Brig guarded the beaches from KANGNUNG to ULCHIN.
18 Sep 50, the WONSAN Marine Brigade scattered.
PW fled northward by himself through mountain trails to YANGDOK (BU9644), arriving there 10 Oct 50.
From 10 Oct 50 to 10 Nov 50, PW worked as a farm laborer near YANGDOK.
10 Nov 50, PW joined the 14th Regt, 27th Div at YANGDOK.
15 Nov 50, the 14th Regt departed YANGDOK and marched south, trying to locate the 27th Div.
20 Nov 50, the 14th Regt reached ICHON (CT2762) and was told by the II Corps CG to move south with the II Corps Hq as security.
II Corps Hq and the 14th Regt departed ICHON on 22 Nov 50 and marched through mountainous terrain until they arrived 4 Km N of SONG KWANG GOL 14 Jan 51.
With the report that ROK Units were approx 2 Km south of SONG KWANG GOL 14th Regt attacked at dawn 15 Jan 51 and captured a high hill 2 Km N of SONG KWANG GOL (성광골).
16 Jan 51, the 14th Regt was in a defensive position 2 Km north of SONG KWANG GOL.
PW deserted with 4 others and surrendered to the ROK 3rd Regiment.

7. FOOD AND AMMO SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained locally from abandoned farm houses. This was the only means of obtaining any food.
Ammo was last issued at YANGDOK o/a 20 Nov 50. At present the only means of acquiring ammo was to attack small UN units for it.

8. MORALE:
Morale of the troops with 14th Regt was fairly low because of shortage of ammo and clothing.

9. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
Runners were the chief means of communications within the 14th Regt.

10. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW surrendered because he saw UN leaflets.
b. Did you see any United Nations leaflets, or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. The leaflet stated, “If you surrender we will treat you fairly and will not kill you.”
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. No. He did not believe it.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. No.
