ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3144　3 February 1951

FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #3-0019)　22 January 1951

Information is considered fairly accurate. PW talked freely but was unobservant and lacked detailed info.

Reliability: Fair.

28 Jul 50 Volunteered into NKA at SEOUL and assigned to 102nd Unit, 25th Bn, 2nd Co.

29 Jul 50 The 102nd Unit dep SEOUL and after about 11/2 months of marching arr at KUNSAN (群山). About this time the UN offensive began and the 102nd Unit started retreating northward.

Mid Nov 50 PW’s company arr at KUTTUN, which is a small village located near the 38th Parallel.

25 Nov 50 PW and 4 other men from his Co were assigned to “HUNGBOK” Guerrilla Unit, which was at KUTTUN for reorganization. The “TANJONG”, “HYONSOK”, “SO”, “CHI”, “KANGIL” and “CHONGGI” guerrilla bands were also at KUTTUN.

26 Dec 50 The seven guerrilla bands departed KUTTN and entered the TAEBAEK mountains. And they travelled the mountain trails of TAEBAEK and “SOBAK” Mountain Ranges.

1 Jan 51 The guerrilla bands reached a small village north of TANYANG (丹陽). They were planning to reach ANDONG by passing through MUNGYONG (聞慶) and TANGYANG.

2 Jan 51 While the guerrilla bands were resting at the small village north of TANYANG the “HUNGBOK” unit was engaged by ROK troops, and the engagement started around 1200 and continued till it was dark. The other guerrilla bands did not participate in this action. The “HUNGBOK” unit suffered 1 KIA and 5 wounded. There was no loss of equipment. ROK troops retreated to TANYANG and the “HUNGBOK” unit remained in the nearby mountains.

O/a 5 Jan 51 The “KANGIL” guerrilla unit came down from the mountains and attacked the village police station while PW and 7 other members of the “HUNGBOK” unit who were sick or wounded, were staying in a Korean home. A few days later PW and the 7 men climbed up to the nearby mountains where the “HUNGBOK” unit was located. Few days later the 7 guerrilla bands departed the area. According to what PW heard from the guerrillas that CHLISAN (智異山) was their destination.

19 Jan 51 PW and about 10 other sick or wounded guerrillas were captured by ROK troops.

KIM Hung Bok (金興福), Unit Commander, about 25, “HUNG BOK” unit commander, appears to be experienced soldier. The names of the officers in the guerrilla units were not revealed to the men. They addressed their superiors as for example “Comrade Unit Commander”, “Comrade Plat Ldr”, etc.

Pass words changed daily but the same sign and counter sign were used by all 7 guerrilla bands. An example “SOYA” (Sign) “SAUCE” (counter sing). Code names of the guerrilla bands unknown.

The 7 guerrilla bands comprised a Guerrilla I Corps (遊擊隊一軍團). The Guerrilla Corps Headquarters traveled together with the guerrilla bands and usually remained about 2 Km to the rear.

There were approximately 120 men in the “HUNGBOK” unit. PW believed that these were approximately the same number of personnel in each of the other 6 guerrilla bands. There were 2 women in the “HUNGBOK” unit who were nurses.

There was one medical officer in the “HUNGBOK” unit but there were no medical supplies. There were an operations officer and supply officer. The supply officer had 2 NCOs under him and the NCOs were responsible for the supplying of the platoon which they were assigned to. Practically all the members of the guerrilla band were former NKA personnel.

The men were armed with M1 Rifles, Russian rifles, carbines, and hand grenades. Some men were without weapons. There was insufficient ammo for the rifles. PW believed that there was about the same number of weapons and ammunition in each guerrilla band.

Some of the members wore civilian clothes but there were many who were clad in NKA uniforms.

The headquarters for the Guerrilla Army Group was to be established at “CHLISAN”, where guerrilla activities were to be conducted.
