FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #3 - 0011) 19 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly cooperative but was below average in intelligence. His estimations of strength and directions seems poor. Due to his short length of service he had very little information. Reliability - poor.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
19 Dec 50 - Conscripted at KUMHWA (金化). PW observed approx 2,000 conscripts in the vicinity of KUMHWA and believed to be assigned to the 10th Division. After 3 days basic training in the vicinity of KUMHWA these conscripts, PW included, moved to HWACHON (華川) on foot.
24 Dec 50 - The conscripts were assigned to various units under the II Corps. PW was assigned to the 10th Div, 29th Regt, 1st Bn Hqs, Raider Plat, 2nd Sqd. The same day 10th Division departed HWACHON on foot.
O/a 27 Dec 50 - 10th Div arrived in the vicinity of INJE (麟蹄) and joined other units believed to be under the II Corps.
O/a 28 Dec 50 - 27th and 29th Regt’s departed INJE and travelled south by night.
O/a 17 Jan 51 - 27th and 29th Regt’s arrived in a small village approximately 5 miles NE of ANDONG (安東).
18 Jan 51 - PW deserted his unit and surrendered to the local police of TAEDONG WARYONG.

4. UNIT ORGANIZATION AND STRENGTH:
27th and 29th Regt’s were under the 10th Division. Other units of the same division were unknown.
29th Regt composed of 4 infantry battalions, 1 mortar battalion and 1 HMG Company. Strength of each infantry battalion was estimated at 800, 70 for the mortar battalion and 40 for the HMG Co.
The 1st Battalion to which PW was assigned, consisted of 4 infantry companies of approx 200 men each. Raider plat consisted of one Jr Lt and 16 men.
The above estimates of strengths were obtained when the 10th Div was reorganized at HWACHON o/a 24 Dec 50 and believed to be unchanged to the present since there were very few casualties while PW was with his unit.
Hq 1st Bn, 29th Regt and the 4 Co Hqs under the 1st Bn had telephones one per Hq’s.

5. WEAPONS 29th Regiment:
Several mortars size and type unknown were observed being carried by troops while the regiment was moving South. Approx 80% of the infantry men were armed with Russian rifles, Japanese Rifles, captured US M-1 Rifles and carbines. Sqd and Plat leaders were armed with Russian PPSH SMGs and Co CO’s had pistols.

6. DISPOSITION:
27th Regt was last observed on 18 Jan 51 while the unit was advancing through mountain trails approx 1/2 mile direction unk from TAEDONG WARYONG. Other units were not observed in the vicinity.

7. INTENTION (Hearsay):
While the unit was in INJE and while the unit was moving south PW heard from his Bn CO that the intention of the 29th Regiment was to attack ANDONG or advance to the NAKTONG River in the vicinity of ANDONG.

8. MORALE:
Morale was fairly high. The men were told by their CO’s that the victory will be their’s if they reach the NAKTONG River.

9. OTHER UNITS:
When PW was in KUMHWA o/a 20 Dec he heard from a NKA private who was with the CCF, that a division of CCF was stationed in KUMHWA Area. PW observed approx 100 of them.

10. AMMO AND FOOD SUPPLIES:
Each rifleman was issued approx 100 rounds of rifle ammo at HWACHON and INJE. Source of ammo supply was unk. Food was foraged. Approx 50% of the men were issued 1 hand grenade (Russian made and white) each before leaving INJE.

11. REMARKS:
PW remembers his division was called CHIPSA which can either mean the abbreviation for “10th Div” or the number “14”, hence either 10th or 14th Division.
