2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared cooperative but was unobservant and lacked detailed information. Reliability - fair.

3. MILITARY HISTORY:
Mid Dec 50 - Notified that there was a village meeting, PW reported and was selected together with about 7 other young men, to be inducted into the NKA at PYONGGANG (平康). PW was assigned to the 10th Div, 29th Regt, 1st Bn, 2nd Co. After one day at PYONGGANG PW departed PYONGGANG on foot with a large group of men, which he believed comprised the 29th Regt. This group of men arrived at “KUMHWA” (金化) after one night of marching. After a day’s rest at “KUMHWA” the group continued marching and arrived at YANGGU which was a small village believed to be located south of KUMHWA. Then the following day the group continued it’s march and arrived at HWACH’ON-NI (化川里). Then it marched to HONGCH’ON (洪川).
O/a 15 Jan 51 - The group arrived in the vicinity of KAMCH’ON and PW alone deserted his unit. He had always entertained the thought of deserting and saw his chance after supper and deserted. PW heard rumors that his unit was to continue marching until they reached PUSAN. However, these were merely rumors among the men.
16 Jan 51 - After a night’s rest PW went down to a Korean village and was arrested by the security police in that village.

4. MORALE:
PW observed that about 50 percent of his unit were hardened veterans and the other 50 percent were conscripts. Fighting spirit was high among the veterans but the conscripts were always thinking of returning home to their families. Many conscripts were not issued uniforms and arms. PW believed that his unit was poorly armed and had insufficient ammunition. There appeared to be no supply system.

For the Commanding Officer:

TEN EYCK
