FIELD REPORT (2 Div - LDI - 0072) 20 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: FE Yong Ki
RANK: Pvt
UNIT: 6th Div, 1st Regt, 2nd Bn
PLACE & DATE OF CAPTURE: 18 Jan 51 at DS2833
CAPTURED BY: 9th Inf Regt

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was a 2nd Lt in the 8th ROK Div, 10th Regt before he was captured by a CCF Unit at YONGWON 25 Nov 50. PW was very cooperative and seemed quite sure of himself. Following information assessed as fairly reliable.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
o/a 1 Dec 2nd Bn, estimated strength 350 started it’s move southward taking Mt trails. 2nd Bn reached a location 8 KMs S of WONJU 10 Jan and on the 11 Jan it contacted UN Forces as it was withdrawing toward WONJU. 2nd Bn was last observed withdrawing north. Heard from Co CO that Bn was going to HONGCHON DS0572, Enroute PW deserted.
According to PW 2nd Bn was composed of 4 groups: 1st group - volunteers, 70, entered Army Jun 50. Morale very high. 2nd group - volunteers, 70, recent morale low. 3rd group - SK conscripts, 60, morale, always looking for a chance to escape. 4th group - captured ROK soldiers, 100, morale same as 3rd group. Although PW used as a labor, he claims 50% of captured ROKs were armed.
Code Names & Numbers: 6th Div - KUNI Div, 1st Regt - PEKKOL Unit, 2nd Bn - 102 Bn. Heard code names for Bn in 1st Regt changed as of 2 Jan 51. 1st Bn - HWANGHAEDO, 2nd Bn - P’YONGANDO, 3rd Bn - KANGWONDO.
Weapons in 2nd Bn: 90% armed with Russian rifles (50 rds each rifle), Japanese Model 99 (35 rds each), US Carbine (30 rds each) and M 1 rifles (24 rds each). 3x81mm mortars (total 250 rds), 4xAT Rifles (40-50 rds each), 5 HMG (150 rds each), 3 LMG (150 rds each).

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
All troops in 2nd Bn were in winter uniforms.
Food obtained from villages was insufficient.
An estimated 50% of 2nd Bn was suffering from frostbite. No care was given them and many were observed limping.
Morae was very low. Many deserters.
