FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0221) 21 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: KIM, Nam Nyong (金南■)

DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: Surrendered on 181330 Jan 51 at (CS8527)

2. ASSESSMENT:
In spite of PW’s limited service with the NKA, he was very cooperative during interrogation and his information appeared reliable. It is not recommended that he be further interrogated.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
PW conscripted 10 Dec 50, at ICHON (CT1662), into the 3rd Sqd, 3rd Plat, 3rd Co, 1st Bn, 2nd Regt, 31st NK Div.
11 Dec 50, the entire 2nd Regt left ICHON and proceeded south. The unit arrived at P’YONGGANG (CT5152) on or about 22 Dec 50 and departed there the same night. Arrived at KUNHUNG (CT6447) the morning of 23 Dec 50. There he observed countless NKA troops armed with HMGs, LMGs, PPSH SMGs, M-1 rifles, and Russian rifles. He did not know what unit they belonged to nor their destination, however, the unit was advancing towards HWACH’ON (CT8618) 23 Dec 50. There PW also observed many NKA troops whom he believed were the very troops he observed at KUNHUNG.
The unit passed through HWACH’ON on or about 25 Dec 50 and arrived at KUMAN-NI located some 12 km east of HWACH’ON on 260100 Dec 50.
There PW observed approximately 1,000 NKA troops in the village. The unit was armed with HMGs, LMGs, PPSH SMGs and rifles.
272300 Dec 50, due to a bad foot PW became a straggler and travelled eastward to YANGGU (DT1217) where the Regt was.
29 Dec 50, PW was picked up by the 39th Ind Unit at PANGCH’ON 8 km E of KUMAN-NI, and told to travel with them since they were headed in the same direction.
30 Dec 50, PW and the unit arrived at YANGGU, where PW observed a large number of NKA troops, however, he was unable to located his unit in the village.
30 Dec 50, the unit left for CHANG-NI (DT1515) and arrived there 31 Dec 50, where it spent two days.
2 Jan 51, the unit departed CHANG-NI and arrived at HONGCHON (DS0272) o/a 10 Jan 51. It departed HONGCHON, took to the mountain trails on the same day, and arrived at UNCHON-NI 10 km NE of YOJU on 15 Jan 51 after by-passing HOENGSONG (DS1148). Upon arrival at UNCHON-NI, PW met a 20 men CCF patrol and heard from their Korean interpreter that their Hq was located approximately 4 km NE of UNCHON-NI, and that the strength of their unit was 700 men.
171900 Jan 51, he and 20 others were sent on a mission to (CS8527) to ambush the enemy troops. They were instructed by their Bn CO to encounter enemy troops inferior to them and to let those superior to them alone.
His Plat Ldr might have received more specific instructions on the ambush, he himself had not received any detailed instructions on this matter.
181300 Jan 51, at (CS8527) he surrendered to the UN troops when the unit was disorganized by enemy fire.
As of 18 Jan 51, his 2nd Bn CP was located at a location approximately 2 km N of where he surrendered and heard that the 39th Ind Unit CP was located in the vic of UNCHON-NI.

b. Unit Organization:
39th Unit (Code Name: CHONCHONG-GANG). Strength 220 men, composed of 2 Bns. Each Bn composed of 3 Rifle Co’s. Each Co of 35 men composed of 3 Rifle Plats. Each Rifle Plat composed of 2 Rifle Sqds.
Unit was armed with PPSH SMGs (72 rds ea), M1 rifles (80 to 100 rds ea), US Carbines (80 to 100 rds ea), Russian rifles (80 to 100 rds ea) and 1 grenade per man.
II NK Corps was composed of the 6th, 9th, 10th, 12th, and 31st Divisions.
The 31st Div (strength 1,800 men) was composed of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bns and an artillery battery. (Ed Note: Sic)
Each Rifle Bn was composed of 3 Rifle Co’s and one HMG Co with 3 to 4 HMGs.
Each Rifle Co was composed of 3 Rifle Plats; each Plat had 3 Sqds.

c. Intentions:
PW claims that the mission of 39th Ind Unit was to advance as far as TAEJON. After it had occupied TAEJON the 39th Ind Unit was to organize a new division. He did not know the date and method in which this was to be accomplished.
The immediate mission of the 39th Ind Unit was to destroy UN Forces warehouses, bridges and to harass the MSR so that it will deprive UN Forces of their supplies and transportation.
