a. Chronology:
17 Jul 50, PW was inducted into the NKA at HUNGNAM and assigned to the Home Ministry 103rd Security Brigade at CHORWON where he underwent training.
O/a 20 Sep 50, the 103rd Security Brigade withdrew to KANGGYE, arriving o/a 1 Nov 50. Subject was then reassigned to the 1st NK Div which saw combat in South KOREA.
1 Dec 50, the 1st Div departed KANGGYE and marched to HAMHUNG where it was to engage the enemy, according to their CO. They arrived in the vic of HAMHUNG 20 Dec 50 via CHANGJIN and H■■GWON but did not engage any enemy force. After remaining there for 3 days the 1st Div began a march south, via CHONPYONG, where they came across the NKA 3rd Div of approximately 10,000 men and an unknown Div of 10,000 men.
25 Dec 50, while 40 Km south of CHONGPYONG, PW was dispatched by his platoon leader to obtain his horse at a village 4 Km S of CHONGPYONG with instructions to proceed to SEOUL if he did not find the unit there upon his return because the 1st Div would be there in SEOUL by 4 Jan 51, proceeding via CHORWON, KUMHWA, HWACHON, and CHUNCHON. Since his unit had already left the area PW made for SEOUL and arrived there 140700 Jan 51 where he spent the night. On the following morning he inquired a building called the Garrison Hq (街連司令部). He went into the Hq and inquired about the 1st Div. A captain (4 stars) told him that SEOUL was occupied by the II NKA Corps and that the III NKA Corps to which his 1st Div belonged was either in the CHUNCHON or WONJU area, and that it was best he proceeded there immediately.
141100 Jan 51, PW and a Sgt KIM of the 1st Div departed SEOUL and headed toward WONJU, and slept for the night at a location roughly 4 Km E of a damaged steel bridge.
150800 Jan 51, they continued their trek and passed NAMHAN-SANSONG (CS397488) Castle. While lodging in a house approximately 4 Km E of east castle gate, a Korean Interpreter with the CCF came to borrow some cooking utensils in the house. When questioned as to what they were doing there, subject told him that they were trying to rejoin their unit. The interpreter told him that the III NKA Corps was supposed to be in the vicinity of WONJU. The CCF troops in the area had been relieved recently from the front and had come here to rest.
161200 Jan 51, subject and his companion arrived at an unknown village (believed located in vic (CS7239) where they observed an estimated two battalions of CCF troops in the village.
On the morning of 171900 Jan 51, they were captured together by UN Forces in vic 4 Km N of YOJU (CS7928).
