FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0213) 12 January 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: HONG, Song Jik (洪性職)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW’s attitude towards the interrogator, it appeared, was one of arrogance and haughtiness. He answered all questions with a snap which was more distasteful than pleasing. His information although believed reliable in some respects was contradictory and not of voluntary nature. In view thereof information contained in this report was obtained only through repeated and continuous questioning of the PW and should therefore be assessed accordingly.

3. TACTICAL:
a. Chronology:
17 May 50, PW left his home in CHWAHANG-NI (CS5118) after being advised of the advantages of becoming a guerrilla by his friend, KIM, Sok ki. 19 May 50, he arrived at an unknown mountain approximately 8 km S of SEOUL, where 160 Communists assembled 20 May 50.
The night of 21 May 50 they departed for HWACH’ON (CT6617) and passed the following places: KWANGJU (CS3948), YANGPYONG (CS6649), CHUNCHON (CS8893). On 23 May 50, they arrived at an unknown village approximately 2 Km W of HWACHON.
24 May 50, KIM, Sok Ki was chosen company commander of a group of 160 men which then was designated 1st Guerrilla Company. On the same day the company moved to an unknown mountain approximately 2 Km N of HWACH’ON WHERE 4 SMGs and 156 rifles were acquired by the CO from an unknown source. The company trained until 28 Jun 50.
Departing on 28 Jun 50, they advanced south to vicinity of the NAKDONG River via the following route: CHUNCH’ON, SEOUL, SUWON and TAEJON. During the latter part of Sep 50, they retreated back to North KOREA with an unknown NKA unit through mountain trails and arrived at CHANGJU (KE8596) 13 Dec 50.
15 Dec 50, the company, numbering 90 men with approximately 20,000 NKA troops (unit designation unknown), entered MANCHURIA, and arrived at an unknown village located approximately 40 km N of the YALU River where they were trained for 6 days. PW’s guerrilla company was then incorporated into the 6th Regt of the 3rd Div, II NKA Corps. During training PW heard from his Regt CO that 20,000 men of the II NKA Corps were training.
24 Dec 50, the II Corps crossed the YALU River and entered SINUIJU via ANTUNG, MANCHURIA and arrived at KAESONG on 29 Dec 50 via P’YONGYANG.
2 Jan 51, elements of the 3rd NK Div engaged ROK troops and took 6 ROK prisoners near UIJONGBU. On the night of 3 Jan 51, II Corps marched into SEOUL without opposition. At SEOUL, all divisions of the (Sic) were attached to CCF units to act as guides.
4 Jan 51, the 3rd Div departed SEOUL and arrived at KODONGCH’ON, approximately 4 Km NW of SUWON. PW and former members of the guerrilla company departed SEOUL separately on the same day and arrived KODONGCH’ON at 050600 Jan, where the 3rd Div was already located. Upon arrival there, PW and another guerrilla were sent out on reconnaissance disguised as refugees. They were to report back to 3rd Div as soon as they saw the enemy. The two separated to SUWON.
PW headed for the YONGIN area, his hometown. He passed through YONGIN (CS3328), YANGJI-RI (CS4822), CHWAHANG-NI (CS5118), PAECAM-NI (CS5514), CHUKSAN-NI (CS6004), and arrived at KWANGHEWON-NI (CR6294) at 081200 Jan 51. Here he was captured by the 7th Regt I&R, 6th ROK Div.

b. Unit Organization:
PW heard from his Regt CO that the II Corps was composed of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th, and 15th Ldv with an overall strength of approximately 18,000 men. The 3rd Div was composed of 3 Regts, 7th, 6th, and 9th Regt. There were 900 men in the 6th, 500 men in the 7th, and 600 men in the 9th Regt. The 6th Regt was composed of 3 Bns which were the 2nd Inf Bn, 4th Arty Bn, and 5th Inf Bn. The 4th Arty Bn was composed of the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Btry. Composition of other units were unknown.
There were 84 men in the 1st Guerrilla Company as of 5 Jan 51 when it was with the 3rd Div in the vicinity of SUWON. Each member of the guerrilla unit had a piece of red cloth with two yellow striped on which were inscribed his unit designation and name.
PW observed approximately 30,000 CCF troops in the vicinity of TUKSOM (CS2055) on 4 Jan 51. Designation unknown. There were 6 artillery pieces (size unknown), 4 tanks, and 8 trucks close by. We also observed 4 tanks heading south when he crossed the IMJIN River.
PW heard from his CO that there were approximately 20,000 CCF troops (unit unknown) at unknown mountain approximately 10 Km NW of SUWON.

c. Weapons:
There were 4 truck-drawn 76mm field guns in the 4th Arty Bn, 6th Regt and 3x76mm field guns and two mortars in the 8th Arty Bn, 7th Regt. There were 8 camels and 3 trucks in the 7th Regt. 2 camels pulled 1 gun each. There were 5 truck-mounted AA guns. Ammo situation was heard to be bad. All men were either armed with SMG, M1 Rifle, carbines or rifles. There were approximately 32 rounds of ammo per weapon which were last issued at UIJONGBU.
60% of the CCF troops were armed with rifles, SMG, M1 rifles, and carbines while 40% were unarmed.

d. Unit Headquarters:
3rd Div CP was located at KODONCHON village located approximately 4 Km NW of SUWON, as of 5 Jan 51.

e. Transportation and Supply:
Trucks, camels, and ox-carts were used to transport ammo, food, and clothing. The 3rd Div received its latest supply of ammo, food, and clothing at UIJONGBU 2 Jan 51 from the CCF.

f. Intention:
PW heard from his company commander that the 3rd Div was headed toward YONGIN area.
