2. ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative and fairly intelligent; memory and dates poor. Reliability, poor.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
18 Sep 50: Conscripted into NKA at CHONCH'ON-MYON (前川面).
27 Sep 50: 150 recruits went to YONCH'ON (漣川) by train and PW was assigned to 12th Div, 5th Regt, 3rd Bn, SMG Co, 2nd Plat, 2nd Sqd.
4 Oct 50: PW and another man were left to watch 3rd Bn equipment left at YONCH'ON (漣川). Both deserted and started home.
2 Nov 50: After parting from his companion at YANGDOK (楊德), PW went to his home in CHONCH'ON.
12 Nov 50: Discovered by the NK MP's and put in jail.
18 Nov 50: Released and sent to MANP'OJIN (滿浦鎭) with 60 others, by truck.
20 NOV 50: Assigned to the 26th Brigade, 5th Bn, Mortar Co, 1st Plat, 1st Sqd and promoted to Jr Sgt.
27 Nov 50: 26th Brigade moved to HUICH'ON (熙川) by train. Trip took 2 days.
6 Dec 50: 5th Bn only, marched to UNSAN (雲山) and then to KAECHON (价天).
5 Jan 51: 5th Bn marched through P'YONGYANG and arrived CHINNAMP'O (錢南浦).
6 Jan 51: 68 picked men from 45 mm Rapid-fire Gun Co and Mortar Co crossed the TAEDONG River (大同江) to CHODO Island (■島) and engaged local Security Force. Same day, the wounded were sent across the river to CHINNAMP'O (錢南浦). The boat used to cross the TAEDONG River (大同江) was wooden barge 10 m long (capacity- 100 men). The remaining men continued the engagement until 7 Jan 51. When the Sr Lt who led them deserted, 27 men decided to give themselves up.

b. Organization:
Code Name of 5th Bn - YANGJAKANG (楊子江)
MORTAR Co - Equipped with one 82 mm mortar and 6 x 60 mm mortars all of US make.
Each Bn had 3 HMGs end 5 LMGs.

c. Personalities:

KIM, Kwan Sik (金寬植) (김관식); Maj (少佐); 27; 5th Bn Exec Off.
CHON, Man Po (田滿浦) (전만포); Capt (總尉); 29; Bn Political Officer.

d. Communication:
Brigade and Bns:
By phones or by officer courier.
Co and below:
By EM runners.
5th Bn had 2 phones, range 2 km. Believed to be of Japanese make.

e. Disposition:
Headquarters of the 26th Brigade was located in YONGGANG (龍岡). Location of Bns unknown. (6 Jan 51)

f. Intentions:
26th Brigade had the mission of preventing the South Korean Local Security Force from disturbing the People's Committee (人民委員會) engaged in Political Indoctrination of the area.

g. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
Each Co had a first-aid ran who took care of the lightly wounded. The seriously wounded were sent back to the Bn aid station located 5 km to the rear of the Bn. Bn CP was located about 4 km to the rear of the front lines.

h. Supply:
Each man carried about 3 days rations. Rifleman carried 100 rds and SMG men carried 142 rds. 5th Bn Mortar Co only had 12x 60 mm mortar shells. No 82 mm shells.
